대학원, 미술 현장과 교육의 교차점

국문 초록

오늘날 미술가들에게 대학원 교육의 중요성은 날로 증가하는 반면 국내 대학원의 위상과 평가는 긍정적이지 못하다. 그것은 대학원이 학부과정과 차별화되지 못하고 미술 현장과도 적절히 연결되지 못했기 때문일 것이다. 이러한 문제의 해결을 위해 대학원과 미술 현장을 즉각적으로 연결시킬 때 빈번하게 대학원을 미술계의 이전 단계로 또는 미술계를 대학원의 상위로 위계화하는 문제가 발생한다. 그것은 젊은 세대의 제도권 편입을 정당화하는 근거가 될 수 있다. 반면에 교육 기관에 소속된 제도비판 미술가들의 사례는 비판적인 관계 설정을 통해 젊은 미술가들이 주류 미술계에 편입되지 않는 방식과 대학원이 실험적인 교육 현장인 동시에 대안적인 미술 현장이 되는 교차점이 될 수 있음을 제시한다. 그리고 현대미술가들이 미술 제도를 너머 다양한 주변 학문을 포함하는 수평적 축을 다루어야 한다는 요구는 대학원이 주류 미술계의 진입 경로라는 제한된 설명에서 벗어나 정당성을 확보하는 계기가 된다. 즉 수평적 축의 확장에 미술가들이 체계적으로 대응하도록 하는 시스템으로서 적절하게 작동할 때 대학원의 정당성은 확보될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Graduate program becomes important more and more for artists today; however, graduate schools in Korea do not have good reputations or a positive status. This could be because graduate schools in Korea are not differentiated from undergraduate programs and they are not properly connected with the art scene. However, when graduate schools and the art scene are directly involved with each other to resolve this problem, it generates the problem of creating a hierarchy as graduate school is often represented as a prior phase to the art world, and the art world is seen to be above graduate school. This logic becomes the basis for justifying a young generation’s incorporation into the mainstream art world. On the other hand, artists involved with institutional critique who belong to the education institutions suggest a way where young artists are not merely incorporated into the mainstream art world. They further suggest that graduate school can be a point of intersection where an experimental place for education and an alternative field of art can cross by setting up critical relations to the art scene. Meanwhile, the demand that contemporary artists have to deal with the horizontal axis, that includes the institution of art and different academic disciplines, becomes an opportunity to forward graduate school’s legitimacy beyond the limited explanation that graduate school is an entry into the mainstream art world. In other words, when graduate school functions properly as a system; in which artists methodically respond to the expansion of the horizontal axis, graduate school will obtain its legitimacy.
