국문 초록

이 연구는 아담 부약의 도시 사진집 Lwów를 통해 도시의 이미지와 정체성이 사진집이라는 작품 안에서 어떻게 구성되고 작동하는지를 알아보려는 목적을 가진다. 르부프는, 현재는 우크라이나 도시로 우크라이나에서는 르비우(L'viv)라고 불리는데, 오랜 기간 동안 폴란드 땅에 속하면서 문화 발전의 전성기를 누렸던 곳으로 2차 세계대전 역사 속의 잃어버린 영토에 대한 폴란드 인들의 노스탤지어를 상징하는 장소이다. 사진집 Lwów는 작가가 르부프라는 도시를 주제로 하여 만들어 낸 서사의 장으로, 사진집을 이루는 여러 요소들은 도시의 이미지를 매개로 하여 독립적으로, 또는 상호작용을 통해 의미를 생산해 낸다. 연구는 사진집 Lwów가 가지고 있는 내용을 내부적, 근원적, 외부적 맥락으로 나누어, 사진집의 텍스트와 구성, 페리텍스트에서, 작가의 작품세계와 도시 르부프의 역사 연구, 그리고 사진집이 발표된 시대적 배경과 우크라이나와 폴란드 인들의 르부프에 대한 역사인식을 참고로 하여 진행되었다. 작가의 시선은 이 도시에 살고 있는 사람들의 이미지를 거의 배제하는 대신 르부프가 폴란드령이었을 때의 많은 건물들에 향해 있는데, 사진집에 등장하는 건물들을 정리해보면, 폴란드 행정구역 중 하나로서의 르부프의 시청과 건물들, 문화인물을 키워냈던 교육문화시설과 도시 시설, 가톨릭을 위시한 여러 종교 시설을 지나, 이 모든 것을 과거 속으로 종결짓는 묘지에서 끝난다. 아담 부약은 피사체로 르부프의 폴란드적 정체성을 가장 잘 보여주는 공간들을 선택했으며, 이렇게 제한된 수의 사진과 배열로 만들어낸 치밀한 내러티브로 실제의 도시와는 다른, 노스탤지어의 공간으로서의 르부프를 창조해냈다. 이러한 측면에서 사진집 Lwów에서 보이고 있는 아담 부약의 작품세계는 1930년대 얀 부우학(Jan Bułhak)이 주창한 '조국 사진 fotografia ojczysta' 이라고 불려온 장르에 가깝다고 할 수 있겠다.

영문 초록

The theme of this study is Polish photographer Adam Bujak(1946-)'s 1993 Photo Album Lwów and how the image of a city and its identity is formulated by a series of photographic images. Lwów is a Polish name for Ukrainian City of L'viv (literally meaing 'of Lions'), historically for a long time had belonged to the territory of Poland. For many Poles, the city symbolizes the golden age of Polish culture, prosperity, religious tolerance and foremost, the lost territory and nostalgia. Adam Bujak's photography album Lwów here functions as a field of narrative where various elements consisting this album make meanings. This study analyzes these complex layers of meanings through contexts, according to photography theoretician Terry Barrett; text and narrative, peritext as internal context, the photographer Adam Bujak's works and history of Lwów as original context, and the understandings of Lwów by Poles and Ukrainians as well as the historical background of this photograph album as external context. The lens of Adam Bujak captures Lwów as former Polish city, as nostalgic lost home. Excluding almost any of contemporary Ukrainian citizens living in Lwów , the photographer focuses on buildings; buildings of Polish past, from administrative to cultural and educational centers, Polish upper class' residences to lots of religious buildings, centered in catholic church, ending with Polish cemetery with famous Poles. The selected places are the showcases of this multicultural city's Polishness, and with carefully managed narrative, Lwów is created as nostalgic, forever-lost, Polish city. This work shows Adam Bujak also as a follower of Polish Photographer and theoretician Jan Błuhak, who claimed the value of 'patriotic photography'; the artistic works of photographers, which heightens the beauty of nature and sublime culture of the motherland. However, with the lens of patriotic photography, the true identity of the city Lwów is nonetheless denied.
