국문 초록

20세기 전반 폴란드 모더니즘 문학의 거장 비톨드 곰브로비츠 Witold Gombrowicz(1904-1969)의 첫 번째 드라마 "이보나, 부르고뉴의 공주 Iwona, księżniczka Burgunda"(1938)는 인간의 존재 그 자체에 초점을 맞추고 있는 작품으로, 그로테스크한 연극인 동시에 개인을 억압하고 무력화시키는 사회에 대한 풍자화이다. 곰브로비츠는 이 작품에서 사회적 메커니즘과 관습을 보여주고 있는데, 특히 순수하게 사회에서 이루어진 조건 범위를 벗어나서 타인과의 관계 속에서 얽혀있는 인간의 상황을 진단하고자 시도한다. 그 방법으로 그는 사람들 사이에서 형성되어지는 '형식'(forma)에 이야기한다. 인간관계에서 생성되는 형식은 필연적으로 마주할 수밖에 없는 '나'와 '타인' 이 동시에 서로에게 영향을 미치며 서로의 존재를 확인하고 형성하도록 만든다. 곰브로비츠는 인간은 결코 스스로 자신이 될 수 없으며, 타인에 의해 만들어지는 존재라고 말한다. 즉 인간은 타인이 자신에게 기대하고 있는 모습대로 행동하게 되고, 그 틀에 자신을 맞추어 가면서 자신의 존재방식을 결정짓게 된다는 것이다. 이것이 바로 '형식'이며 인간은 우리를 억압하는 '형식'으로부터 완전하게 자유로울 수 없고 그렇기 때문에 '가면'을 쓰고 자신의 모습을 무장하게 된다. 이렇게 가면을 쓰고 생성된 나와 타인에 대한 존재인식은 그 가면이 벗겨지고 실체적 자아와 직면하는 순간 흔들릴 수밖에 없다. 타인과의 관계에서도 이와 마찬가지 현상이 일어나면서 사람들은 자신은 물론 타인의 존재에 대한 인식에 변화를 겪고 혼란에 빠진다. 곰브로비츠의 작품은 실존주의와 부조리 예술에 가깝다고 볼 수 있다. 절대 있을 수 없는 그로테스크하고 부조리한 상황으로 표현되는 형식의 문제는 그래서 철학적이고 사회학적인 의미에 주목하도록 만든다. 그리고 이것은 항상 타인을 향해서 생성되어지는 인간관계와 사회 제도에 대한 메타포가 된다.

영문 초록

Witold Gombrowicz (1904-1969) is one of the "big three masters of modernism" representing the first half of the 20th century's Polish literature together with Bruno Schulz and Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. His first drama Ivona, Princess of Burgundian (1938) focuses on the very existence of human beings. This grotesque drama is also a satirical picture of a society that suppresses and incapacitates individuals. In this work Gombrowicz shows social mechanisms and conventions and above all, attempts to diagnose the situation of the human being entangled in relationships with others. In the way of such diagnosis Gombrowicz selected 'the form'. In human relations form of various types always exists. 'I' and 'others' have mutual influences on each other, confirm and create the existence of each other by this form. Namely the form is inevitable in interpersonal relationships. According to Gombrowicz an individual can not be him/herself in their own way and their being is formulated by the others. In other words an individual acts to meet others's expectation to their beings and confirms theirselves to the frame which was determined by others. Human beings can not be free from the form, which suppresses them. Therefore, human beings are themselves wearing 'masks'. The perception of others thus inevitably is based on their 'masks', so when the mask is peeled off and the moment of facing with the substantial ego comes, the whole concept of consciousness of one's own being and of others changes and falls into chaos. The work of Gombrowicz is close to absurd art and existentialism. In this work, the form is represented by the absurd situation in absolutely impossible grotesque, calling attention to philosophical, sociological meanings. This is a metaphor of the social system and the human relations created towards the others all times.
