쿠를란드 공국의 라트비아 문화사적 가치 연구

국문 초록

쿠를란드 공국은 1561년부터 1795년까지 현 라트비아 공화국의 남부지역에 위치해있던 공국이다. 인종적으로 볼 때 동발트어군의 라트비아어를 사용하는 라트비아인들이 국민의 대다수를 이루고 있었으나, 문화적으로는 리보니아 시절부터 발트해 연안에 자리를 잡고 살아온 발트독일인들이 정치, 경제, 행정의 중심에 놓여있었으므로 전반적으로 독일문화권이 두각을 보이는 지역이다. 리보니아 전쟁 이후 리보니아 기사단 사령관이었던 고트하르트 케틀레르가 설립한 이후, 폴란드-리투아니아의 제후국이자 주변강대국들의 내정간섭, 내부 귀족들 간의 권력다툼 등으로 역사 내내 끊임없이 위기상황에 놓여있었고 그 결과 200년에 불과한 짧은 기간 동안만 존재했지만 경제, 무역, 예술, 건축 등의 분야에서 상당한 업적을 남겼다. 1대 케틀레르 왕조 시기에는 야콥 공작의 지도력으로 인해 쿠를란드의 무역과 조선 사업이 유럽 최고의 수준에 이르렀으며, 2대 비론 왕조 시대에는 제정 러시아의 섭정황제를 배출하고 서유럽의 수준과 맞먹는 아름다운 바로크 양식의 건물을 라트비아에 도입하여 라트비아의 건축사를 더 풍성히 장식하였다. 독일문화를 기반으로 하여 이룩된 쿠를란드 공국도 개혁교회 성직자들과 라트비아 민족문화에 관심을 가지고 있던 학자들로 인하여 라트비아문학과 역사 연구에 밑거름이 되는 업적을 많이 남김으로써 결과적으로는 전반적인 라트비아 문화 발전에도 크게 기여했다. 이 논문에서는 한국에서는 거의 알려진 바가 없는 쿠를란드 공국의 역사적 가치와 라트비아 문화에 전반적으로 기여하게 된 역사적, 문화적 배경을 논해보고자 한다.

영문 초록

The Duchy of Courland is the vassal state of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth established in the Southern part of the present Republic of Latvia, and was characterized predominantly by German culture which developed under the influence of Baltic Germans who lived in the region since the beginning of Livonia, although the majority of subordinate class was composed of Latvian nations. Notwithstanding the situation that since the beginning of history initiated by Gotthard Kettler after Livonian War the Duchy was laid under constant and precarious threads because of the interference in domestic affairs from neighboring countries and the power struggle among local gentries, the duchy of Courland produced brilliant accomplishments in fields of economy, trade, art and architecture in the context of the whole Europe, not only in Latvia. During the first dynasty reigned by Kettler house, the trade and shipbuilding technology reached to the highest range in Europe, especially under the remarkable direction of the Duke Jacob Kettler, and the second dynasty of Biron was distinguished by the first Duke Ernst Johann von Biron who became the regent tsar of Russia and paved the way for Baroque and Rococo style to be introduced to Latvian architecture.In spite of the predominance of German culture, the Duchy has also affected enormous influence on the development of Latvian ethnic culture thanks to clergies of Reformed Church and scholars of foresight who had an interest in national culture of local inhabitants and finally produced a series of achievements contributing to the Enlightenment of Latvian nation and the preservation of Latvian culture. In this article I intend to introduce fundamental facts regarding historical values of the duchy of Courland which was not presented in Korean academy where the study on Latvian history is scarcely found, and to discuss the historical and cultural background of their influence on Latvian culture.
