서울과 동경의 보헤미안 장소 비교

국문 초록

본 논문은 서울의 홍대지역과 동경의 시모키타자와의 비교를 통해서 동아시아의 보헤미안 장소의 특징에 관해 시론적으로 살펴본 것이다. 보헤미안은 최근 도시 활성화와 재생의 연구에서 중요한 화두로 대두되고 있는데, 이것은 보헤미안 지역에서 보이는 예술적 경향과 관용성이 젊은 층과 전문직 종사자들의 유입을 유도하여, 도시 예술산업의 발달, 관광객의 증가 등의 도시재생 효과를 보인다고 알려져 있기 때문이다. 본 연구는 이러한 보헤미안 효과가 동아시아에서는 어떻게 반영되고 있는지를 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 보헤미안 씬의 정의를 바탕으로 홍대지역과 시모키타자와의 두 장소에서 보헤미안적 요소가 어느 정도 발견되는지, 두 보헤미안 장소의 공통점과 차이점은 무엇인지를 살펴보았다. 홍대지역과 시모키타자와는 보헤미안 장소에 맞게 예술성, 독특한 문화적 취향, 그리고 자기표현이라는 특성을 나타낸다. 하지만, 두 지역 모두 보헤미안 장소의 주요한 특징인 저항적 가치관과 일탈적 특성이 매우 부족하다는 특징을 보인다. 본 연구는 이에 대해 한국과 일본의 근대화 과정에서의 경험, 양국대학생 및 젊은 층의 생활형태와 정치문화의 특성으로 그 원인을 설명하였다.

영문 초록

This paper deals with the characteristics of the East Asian Bohemian places focusing on Hongdae Area in Seoul and Simokitazawa in Tokyo. Bohemian places are considered a core component driving innovation and urban development in the West. The artists in the Bohemian places are the quintessence in the sense that breaking the eggs of tradition is a prerequisite to cooking a new omelet. Thus, the Bohemian places contribute to atracting young, professional people as well as tourists. The core idea seems broadly accepted by many readers and commentators in the US and Western Europe. This paper tries to analyze whether the same effects are found in the East Asian cities with the case studies of Hongdae area and Simokitazawa. In so doing, the paper reviews similarities and differences between the two places. Hongdae area and Simokitazawa as Bohemain places show artistic characteristics, unique cultural tastes, and self-expressive activities. However, both places lack in cultural resistance against mainstream lifestyle. The two places also lack in transgressive activities. The paper explains the reasons in terms of lifestyle of the youths in Korea and Japan. That is, Youths' high dependence upon parents make them less resistant and transgressive in the East Asia. The low level of cultural resistance can be raised as a main reason for low creative influence of Bohemian places in Seoul and Tokyo.
