국문 초록

『万朝報』 영문란(英文欄)의 주필로 부임한 우치무라 간조, 그가 남긴 기사는 놀라울 정도로 다양한 주제를 담아 국내외의 시사문제를 다루었다. 먼저, 해외를 향해서는 일본을 비롯한 동양에 지배적인 태도를 취하는 서양열강에 격렬한 비판을 가했다. 또한 일본에 거주하는 외국인의 오만불손한 행위에 분노하여 간조는 자신이 그들로부터 일본을 지키는 '도덕적 감시인(道徳的番犬)'이 되고자 했다. 한 편, 국내적으로는 청일전쟁의 승리에 도취해 부국강병을 추구하며 정신적으로 타락한 일본의 현실에 신랄한 비판을 가했다. 특히 삿초번벌정부(薩長藩閥政府)의 부패와 무능은 그의 주요 공격 대상이었다. 그러나 그의 논설은 시사문제를 예리하게 다루면서도 항상 숭고한 정신론이 되었다. 그는 일본에 대해서도 세계에 대해서도 당당하게 자신이 진실이라고 믿는 것을 주장했다. 그의 주장은 오늘날에도 통하는 진실한 표현이 되었으며, 그런 점에서 그의 표현은 일종의 예언이었다고 할 수 있다. 그리고 그의 예언은 오늘날 일본의 현실이 되었다.

영문 초록

The articles of Uchimura Kanzo, who had been appointed the main writer of the English column of "Yorozu Choho", contained a surprising variety of topics and dealt with both domestic and foreign current events. First of all, towards the outside world, he directed fierce criticism at the Western powers that assumed a controlling attitude towards East Asia, beginning with Japan. Also, angry at the extremely arrogant actions of the foreigners living in Japan, he endeavored to become a moral watchdog protecting Japan from them. At the same time, on the domestic side, he directed criticism at a Japan which, carried away by its victory in the Sino-Japanese War and pursuing a policy of national prosperity and military power, had become spiritually decadent. In particular, the corruption and powerlessness of the Satsuma-Choshu Alliance government were an important target of his criticism. However, while his editorials perceptively dealt with current affairs, they would always become lofty discussions of spirituality. He proudly proclaimed to both Japan and the world that which he held to be the truth. As the ideas he put forth were an expression of truth which are also relevant today, they can thus be seen as a kind of prophesy. And his prophesy has become modern-day Japan's reality.
