茶山과 天主敎 관련 人物들과의 관계 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 정약용과 천주교 관련 인물들과의 관계를 고찰한 논문이다. 2장에 등장하는 이벽ㆍ이승훈ㆍ권일신ㆍ정약종은 조선에 천주교를 창설하고 이끌었던 인물이다. 정약용은 이벽ㆍ이승훈을 존모하였고 각별하였으나, 권일신과는 친밀하지 않았던 것 같고, 정약종과는 뜻이 달랐음에도 불구하고 형제간의 의리를 지켰고 서로 존중하였다. 3장에서 살펴본 이가환ㆍ이기양ㆍ권철신ㆍ오석충ㆍ정약전은 처음에 천주교에 가담하였다가 이내 끊었거나 아예 무관하였지만, 반대파의 모함과 조작에 의해 천주교에 연루되어 화를 당한 인물이다. 정약용은 이들을 음해한 공서파의 악행을 낱낱이 기술하여, 그들의 억울한 죽음을 위로하였다. 4장의 목만중ㆍ이기경ㆍ홍인호ㆍ홍의호는 이른 바 남인 공서파에 속한 인물이다. 본래 정약용과 가까운 사이였던 이들은 채제공이 재야로 물러났을 때 蔡黨과 결별하거나, 다산과 오해가 있었거나, 천주교 처단을 빌미로 서로 뜻을 모아 집권세력에 붙어 권세를 누리며 다산 일파를 공격하였다. 5장에서는 다산과 천주교와의 관계를 조명하기 위해 '텍스트에 관한 문제', '천진암ㆍ주어사강학회의 성격과 다산의 참석 여부', '다산의 사상과 천 주교와의 관계'로 나누어 논의하였다. 이를 통해 한때 천주교 서적을 열독하고 신자가 되었지만, 진산사건 이후 천주교를 끊었다고 한 정약용의 고백은 의심의 여지가 없으며, 外背內信한 천주교 신자가 아님을 밝혔다.

영문 초록

This paper presents an investigation into the relationships between Jeong Yak-yong and Catholic Church-related figures. Lee Byeok, Lee Seung-hun, Gwon Il-shin, and Jeong Yak-jong in Chapter 2 built and led Catholic Church in Joseon. Jeong Yak-yong respected, missed, and had particular affection toward Lee Byeok and Lee Seung-hun but had no close relationships with Gwon Il-shin. He cherished brotherly loyalty and respect even though he had different intentions from Jeong Yak-jong. In Chapter 3, Lee Ga-hwan, Lee Gi-yang, Gwon Cheol-shin, Oh Seok-chung, and Jeong Yak-jeon quit Catholicism early or had nothing to do with it, but they got involved in Catholicism by the slander and manipulation of the opposition and suffered damage. Jeong Yak-yong recorded the evil deeds of those who maligned them in details and consoled their wrongful death. In Chapter 4, Mok Man-jung, Lee Gi-gyeong, Hong In-ho, and Hong Ui-ho belonged to the so-called Gongseopa of Namin. Originally having close relationships with Jeong Yak-yong, they parted with Chaedang when Chaejegong was out of power, had misunderstandings with Dasan, or attacked the Dasan party, gathering together under the pretext of persecuting Catholicism and enjoying power on the side of the ruling power. Chapter 5 investigated the relationships between Dasan and Catholicism by discussing "the issues with the texts," "the nature of Cheonjinam and Jueosaganghakhoi and Dasan's participation in them," and "Dasan's ideology and Catholicism." The findings show that there is no doubting his confession that he passionately read Catholic books and became a Catholic at one time but quit the religion after the Jinsan Event, indicating that he was no Catholic.
