국문 초록

「答全履之論文書」(답전이지논문서)에서는 全履之가 李奎報에게 보낸 편지에 대해서 감사하다는 말과 더불어 李奎報 자신을 칭찬한 데 대해서 과찬의 말이라고 겸손해 하는 말, 그리고 문학을 보는 이규보의 자세 등이 서술되어 있다. 全履之는 <비록 시로써 이름을 떨치는 某某輩 같은 몇몇 사람들이 모두 東坡를 본받기는 하되 다만 그 말을 도둑질할 뿐만 아니라 아울러 그 뜻을 훔쳐 쓰면서도 그것을 잘하는 일로 여기는 것을 면치 못하는데, 유독 당신[이규보]만은 옛 사람을 蹈襲(도습)하지 않고 그 말을 지어냄에 새로운 뜻을 창출해내니, 비할 데 없이 훌륭하다.>는 뜻을 나타냈다. 이는 당시의 文風을 알게 해 주는 부분이다. 여기서 대부분의 文人들이 남의 작품을 蹈襲 또는 剽竊(표절)하는데, 李奎報만이 그런 시류에서 벗어나고자 노력하였음을 알 수 있다. 「答全履之論文書」에는 이규보의 작시론적 견해도 제시되어 있다. 이규보는, 그 글을 통해서 옛 사람의 體를 잘 본받는 것이 지극히 어려운 일이므로, 잘못하다가는 표절ㆍ약탈하기 쉽기 때문에 자기 나름의 새로운 말[新語]을 지어내거나 새로운 뜻[新意]을 창출해내지 않을 수 없음을 토로하고 있다. 그것은 당시의 문풍과는 구별되는 문학관을 보인 작시론으로, 新語 혹은 新意(신의)를 지어내는 데 대하여 많은 문인들이 자기를 배격하는 경향이 있는데, 오직 全履之만이 그런 자신을 과찬함을 감당하기 어렵다는 글로「答全履之論文書」는 끝나고 있다. 이규보의 이런 주장은, 역시 옛 사람의 體를 본받기는 하되 제대로 본받기가 쉽지 않으며 그렇다고 서툴게 본받으려다가 도습이나 표절을 일삼게 되지 않을까 우려하여 新語를 지어낼 수밖에 없다는 이규보 나름의 속사정을 토로한 것이다. 당시의 文風이 '도둑놈의 물건이라도 눈에 드는 것이 있으며 탐하는' 풍조인지라, 그런 세태에 휩쓸리지 않기 위해서라도 이규보는 新語를 지어내지 않을 수 없다는 것이다. 결국 이규보의 이와 같은 작시론은 도습이나 표절이 만연한 세태에 일침을 가함으로써 文風을 쇄신하고자 하는 견해의 표출이었다. 이규보는 좋은 뜻을 나타내려고 해서 古人의 시를 잘 본받으려고 했다. 그러나 古人의 시를 잘 본받을 수가 없어서 新語로써 新意를 나타내려고 한 시인이었다. 그렇다고 古人의 시를 본받기를 배척한 시인은 아니었다.

영문 초록

It is described that Lee Cue Bo(李奎報) appreciated a letter from Jeon with mentioning modestly Jeon overpraised him and expressed his view point of literature and so forth in a reply paper to Jeon I Ji(全履之). Jeon put his thought as follows on it. "There are some people just like MoMoBae(某某輩). who became famous for poem, that imitate Dongpa(東坡) as not only stealing others' words but also regarding this behavior as right. But only you. Lee Cue Bo, are respectable literary man who does not doseup predecessors' words but create a new meaning to it." Here are found that most of literary men used to 'doseup'(蹈襲) or 'pyojeol'(剽竊) others' work in those days but only Lee Cue Bo tried to escape from the current of that times. There are also defined his view of versification in a reply paper to Jeon. Lee Cue Bo uttered it's extremely difficult for literary man to imitate predecessor's style completely so they were apt to 'pyojeol(剽竊)' or 'yaktal'(掠奪). Therefore they could not help creating their own new words or new meanings. It's a different theory of versification from those of that times. He ended to write a reply paper to Jeon I Ji mentioning that he was incapable of Jeon's overpraise, while a lot of literary men tended to exclude him concerning about creating new words or new meanings, Lee Cue Bo revealed his worries through these insistence that most of literary men were apt to 'doseup' or 'pyojeol' when they followed predecessor's style poorly, since they couldn't imitate predecessor's style completely even though they could just follow them. The current of literature of that times is just like coveting whatever anything you like though it belongs to a thief, so he could not but creature new words so as not to have been caught up in those current. His theory of versification like this intended to innovate the current of literature that was prevalent then. He imitated predecessors' poem in other to convey good meanings. He was a poet who not rejected to imitate them but created new meanings with new words because it was too difficult to imitate completely.
