국문 초록

西堂 李德壽(1673∼1744)는 18세기 전반을 대표하는 지식인이자 문인이었다. 그는 정치적으로 영조 집권 전반에 학술 자문을 담당했고, 사상적으로는 불교에 심취하였으며, 문학적으로는 법에 얽매이지 않는 자유로운 문학관을 펼쳤다. 하지만 그의 생애는 불우한 개인사 때문에 잘 알려지지 않았고, 현대의 학자들에게서도 별로 조명을 받지 못했다. 이 논문은 그의 문집을 정밀하게 검토하여 그의 인간관계의 윤곽을 드러내고, 그 역사적인 의미를 밝힌 글이다. 그는 西溪 朴世堂(1629∼1702)의 학통을 이었다. 하지만 그는 불교와 도교를 숭상했고, 계보다 세력을 만들기를 좋아하지 않았으며, 거기에 제자들마저 일찍 죽는 바람에 그의 학문은 후대에 전해지지 못했다. 그에 대한 연구가 이루어지지 않은 1차 이유이다. 일상의 붕우는 물론이고, 정계에서 뜻과 행보를 같이했던 선배와 동료들은 거의 모두 少論系 인물들이었다. 조선후기 지식인의 계보에 있어서 少論은 老論이나 南人에 견주어 상대적으로 연구가 되지 않은 분야이다. 이 논문은 향후 18세기 전반 소론계 지식인들의 사상적ㆍ문학적 동향을 이해하는 데 필요한 기본적인 단서를 제공할 것이다.

영문 초록

Sudang(西堂) Lee, Duk-Soo(李德壽) is the representative person of intellectual scholars in the 18th century. Politically, He was taking charge of the National Academy of Science when King Young-Jo was coming into power. Ideologically, He was fascinated with the Buddhism, and literally, He devoted himself to the study of literature without being bound by a rule. Although He was a outstanding scholar as I mentioned, He lived in obscurity all through his life, and modern scholars also didn't focus on Lee's Life and Literature with their face averted. The purpose of this literature is to have a correct understanding of Lee, Duk-Soo by examining of his collection of works and personal relationship. As a matter of fact, Lee was a scholastic mantle of Park, Se-Dang(朴世堂, 1629∼1702). But Lee pursued the Buddhism and the Taoism, and moreover he didn't pay attention to make a school of his literature. This is the most important reason why he wasn't yet brought to the fore by modern scholars. On the basis of the historical data. He was intimate with persons who were in the sect of So-Ron(少論). So-Ron wasn't a majority party at the late of the Chosun Dynasty. Because of this kind of reason, Modern scholars are turning their face away from Lee, Duk-Soo. At the first onset of studying Lee, Duk-Soo, This literature will be the first step toward the solution of Understanding So-Ron's ideology and literature in the early 18th century.
