「흥부전」의 카니발적 특성

국문 초록

필자는 「흥부전」에 구현된 카니발 정신을 특히 언어사용의 문제에 초점을 맞추어 고찰하였다. 그 결과 「흥부전」의 작가는 독자와의 거리를 좁히기 위해 구술 효과를 중점적으로 활용하는 전략을 구사했고, 결국에는 놀부의 박타기 마당을 난장으로 만들어 그 속에서 카니발 정신을 잘 펼쳐내고 있음을 알게 되었다. 이 난장판의 과정을 처음부터 끝까지 온몸으로 체험한 인물이 놀부였다. 처음 심술궂고 사나운 인물이었던 놀부는, 자신이 펼쳐 놓은 박타기 마당에서 전개된 난장판인 카니발 세계를 경험하면서, 민중으로서의 신분적 정체성을 확인하게 된다. 그는 파괴와 그를 통한 창조라는 카니발의 본질과 가장 잘 합치되는 인물이었다. 반면에 항상 우애의 화신처럼 여겨져 왔던 흥부는, 실제로는 시종일관 우유부단하고 이중적인 성격을 가지고 있으며, 제비가 물어다 준 박씨를 통하여 외형적인 변화만을 이룬 행운아에 불과했다. 카니발적 세계관에서 이해할 수 있는 「흥부전」은 철저하게 공식적인 문화의 유쾌한 파괴와 그를 통한 민중적인 세계관의 구축을 문제삼는 작품이었다. 따라서 「흥부전」을 권선징악이라는 선악의 이분법적 논리로는 바르게 이해하기 어렵다. 그러한 선험적이고 피상적인 사고에서 벗어나 개방적이고 분석적인 태도에서 보면, 「흥부전」의주인공은 흥부가 아닌 놀부이며 그 주제는 '문학적 카니발을 통한 낡은 질서의 파괴와 새로운 세계의 창조'임을 확인할 수 있게 된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to consider the carnival characteristics of Kyungpan 25 Sheets Heungbujeon. First of all, I focused on the language which was used in the work. In the result, I confirmed that the author commanded the strategy of oral effect in priority to narrow down the distance with readers. Especially the author operated upon Nolbu's splits-gourd-place to be confused and disordered, and embodied the carnival sprit in that place. Nolbu was the character who experienced this course from the first to the end. He was the only character who changed his personality during that course. In Heungbujeon, the longest sequence of events was related with Nolbu's splits-gourd. If focus on this part and get out of our preconception about Nolbu, we can find that Nolbu is not villainous and negative character. As passing through the course of carnival prepared at splits-gourd-place, Nolbu found his identity, escaped from his negative character and was reborn as a member of the masses. On the other hand, Heungbu, a indecisive and double-faced character, accidentally satisfied his desire and only changed the external shape by virtue of gourd seeds which swallow brought to him. Therefore, if one estimate characters not by dualism of the good or the evil but by plural value, Nolbu can affirmed rather than Hengbu. The crucial elements that Nolbu primarily was acknowledged as a negative character, were his perversity described by narrator at beginning of the work and the monopoly of property. But the former is the mere crabbedness 'described' by narrator rather than Nolbu's vicious original nature, so that is only cliche used for oral effect. The latter is partially caused by Heungbu's weak and reckless life. And at the ending of this version, there are not the event that Heungbu shares his property with his brother, and Nolbu's repentance and good conduct. Then the argument that the theme of Heungbujeon is decided by dualism of the good or the evil, is not at least an authentic interpretation. At a distance away from the existing interpretation about Heungbujeon's theme, and newly from the viewpoint of the popular carnivalism, we can confirm the fact that the hero of Heungbujeon is Nolbu, and the meaning of this work is shaped by the Nolbu's act. And we can summary that the theme of this work is "a destruction of the old order and a creation of the new order through literary carnival." Heungbujeon raises the issues such as a pleasant, but exhaustive destruction of the official culture and a construction of the popular world-view. And Nolbu experiences a change in the center of the text.
