영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to develop an English instruction model using multicultural stories and investigate its effects on elementary school students'English vocabulary learning, affective attitudes, and cultural understanding. For the study, seven multicultural stories were selected and adapted to the students'English level and interest. Then an instruction model was developed and implemented in three fourth grade classes for 14 weeks. To see the effects of the instruction model, various types of data were collected through a pre and post vocabulary test and questionnaires about affective attitudes and cultural understanding. In addition class observation and interview with the students were done. The results of the study show that learning English vocabulary through multicultural stories were effective, especially for the students whose English proficiency was low. It is also revealed that learning English using multicultural English stories improved students'interest and confidence in English. Furthermore, students'experience of other cultures through multicultural stories made a contribution to enhancing their cultural understanding, by allowing them to gain cultural knowledge, by decreasing their cultural biases, and by making them increase their willingness to contact with and curiosity towards other cultures. Finally, it is suggested that multicultural stories be selected and adapted appropriate for students'linguistic, affective, and sociocultural backgrounds.
