한국 불교설화에 나타난 여성상

국문 초록

이 글은 불전설화와 대비하여 한국 불교설화에 나타난 여성상을 검토한 것이다. 특히, 불교설화는 불전설화를 바탕으로 생성되었을 것인데 여성상에 관한한 그것과 다른 방향으로 전개된 사실에 주목하여 그 원인을 추정하고자 하였다. 우선 불전설화에는 '애욕의 화신으로서의 여성상' 등 부정적인 모습이 많이 나타나는데 이는 불경 결집 당시 인도 사회 여성사의 특수성 내지 거기에서 비롯된 불교의 여성관에 기인한 것이다. 아울러 불전설화에는 '구도자로서의 여성상' 등 긍정적인 모습도 나타나는 바 이렇게 정반대의 여성상이 공존하는 것은 불교 사상사적 측면에서 여성관 자체가 극심한 변천을 입었고 이것이 불경 편찬에 반영되었기 때문이다. 이에 비해 한국 불교설화에는 '신녀ㆍ구도자로서의 여성상', '고승의 어머니로서의 여성상', '관음의 화신으로서의 여성상' 등 긍정적인 모습이 많이 나타나 그 모체인 불전설화와는 크게 다른 현상을 보이고 있다. 이는 불교 전래 당시 '여신성불설'을 낳은 대승불교 계통이 이 땅에 정착되었다는 것, 당시 한국 여성의 사회적ㆍ종교적 지위가 후대에 비해 상대적으로 높았다는 것, 불전설화가 민간에 유포되면서 당시 폭넓게 구전되고 있던 구비설화 특히, 건국신화의 성모상을 받아들였기 때문이다. 요컨대 한국 불교설화에 특유한 여성상은 불전설화를 바탕으로 하되 불교 내외적인 원인으로 말미암아 그와는 크게 다른 모습으로 자리잡았다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In this essay I examined the images of women in Korean Buddhist folk tales as compared with the folk tales in the Sutra. In particular, I tried to presume the cause that Korean Buddhist folk tales were produced on the basis of, but were developed in the different direction from, the folk tales in the sutra so far as the images of women concerned. First of all, the negative images of women including 'a sexual desire incarnate' are showed abundantly in the folk tales in the sutra. This is rooted from the particularity of the women's problem of India in the period of regimentation of the sutra and the view of womanhood derived from that. The other side, the affirmative images of women including 'Seeker after Buddhism' are showed in the folk tales in the sutra. The coexistence of this contrary images was due to the extreme changes of the view of womanhood itself in the history of Buddhist thought and the reflection of it in compilation of the sutra. On the contrary the affirmative images of women including 'a believer in and Seeker after Buddhism', 'the mother of a priest', 'the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy incarnate' in Korean Buddhist folk tales are showed abundantly. This appearance is quite differ from the folk tales in the sutra as it's matrix. Tracing to it's origin, first, Mahayana from that Women's attaining Buddhahood was produced, become fixed on Korea in the period of introduction of Buddhism Second, the social and religious status of Korean women at that time was relatively high in comparison with after ages. Third, popularly circulating, the folk tales in the sutra received the folk tales in general and the image of the Holy Mother in the Myth of National Foundation in particular handing down orally in wide range at that time. In shore, the images of women peculiar to Korean Buddhist folk tales were based on the folk tales in the sutra, but become fixed in quite different appearance from it owing to many causes from within and without Buddhism.
