조선후기 경화세족의 이상적 여성상

국문 초록

이 글은 조선후기 경화세족의 이상적 여성상을 당대의 대표적 시인인 申緯(1769~1847)의 경우를 중심으로 살펴보려는 의도로 기획되었다. 우선 신위가 남긴 <詩境圖>의 <背後像>에 대한 기록과 그 題詩를 통해서 그의 마음속에 간직한 이상형은 宋代 李淸照로 대표될 수 있음을 밝혔는데, 이청조가 선택된 것은 탁월한 문예적 재능과 학문적 능력, 여성적 매력은 물론 고동서화에 대한 취미를 같이 누릴 수 있는 동반자를 원했기 때문이다. 자하의 이러한 관점은 일정 부분 淸代 江南 지역의 문인들과의 교유에서 영향 받은 바가 있는 것으로 보인다. 그래서, 이 지방의 여성 문인들이 당대의 저명한 남성 문인들과 어떤 관계를 맺고 있는가를, 특히 자하와 교유했던 吳嵩梁과 陳文述의 경우를 중심으로 고찰하여 자하가 이러한 경향에 얼마나 노출되어 있었는지를 밝히려고 하였다. 조선후기 경화세족들은 자연과 인간에 대한 정밀한 이론체계를 구축하거나 心性 수양에 힘쓰는 것에는 별 관심이 없었다. 그보다는 博學하려고 애쓰면서도 詩ㆍ書ㆍ畵 같은 예술 취향에 몰입하고, "存天理, 알人慾"을 주장하기보다는 차라리 삶에 대해 曠達한 태도를 유지하면서 가급적 인생의 이런 저런 즐거움을 놓치지 않으려고 하였던 것으로 보인다. 또 근원적인 道를 탐구하기보다는 구체적인 사물과 技藝에 더 관심을 가지는 경우가 많았다. 경화세족들의 이러한 성향은 그들의 女性觀에도 반영되었는데, 경화세족들 마음속의 이상적인 부부상은 趙明誠과 李淸照, 趙孟俯와 管道昇, 아니면 錢謙益과 柳如是이었다. 곧, 배우자에게 요구하는 것이 단순한 美貌나 婦德에 그치는 것이 아니라 예술과 학문에 대해서 본인에 필적하는 재능과 지식을 갖추기를 바라는 것이며, 자신이 서재에서 느끼는 즐거움을 함께 할 수 있는 동반자를 찾은 것이다. 만약 許蘭雪軒이 이 시대에 태어나 활동했더라면 훨씬 더 행복한 삶을 살았을 터인데, 실제로 신위는 조선 시대 내내 논란이 분분했던 허난설헌을 시종 옹호하는 입장이었다. 다만, 조선의 경우 이런 인물을 양반가에서 구하기는 매우 어려웠으므로, 그들의 관심은 기녀들에게 쏠릴 수밖에 없었고, 19세기 전반기 서울에서 "三湖亭詩社" 또는 "雲楚 그룹"으로 명명된 기녀 출신의 소실들이 벌였던 문학 활동 역시 이러한 배경에서 가능했었던 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper is planned to survey ideal female view of the nobilities who lived in Hanyang Castle in late period of Chosun Dynasty. For starters, I recognize Shin Wi(申緯)'s ideal female image is Li Qingzhao(李淸照) style through his oriental painting work "Background Image(背後像)" in "Sikeyongdo(詩境圖)", that is poetic imagination in oriental painting. He admired her, because she has excellent literary talent, scholastic ability, and female attraction. Furthermore, he wanted her type, because he was hoping for a curioso female companion who shares his tastes for old curios and oriental paintings with himself. In this respect, he seemed to be influenced by men of letters who lived in near to Southern Yangzi River in Qing Dynasty. so I surveyed the social relationship between women of letters and men of letters who lived in this province through corresponding with his penpals, Wu Songlinag(吳嵩梁) and Chen Wenshu(陳文述). The nobilities in Hanyang Castle in late period of Chosun Dynasty were little interested in constructing precise systemic theory of life and nature, and in cultivating mental cultures. Rather, trying to have pedantic attention to detailed knowledge, they were interested in artistic tastes such as poetry, oriental painting, and calligraphy. And rather than assert to seek the key to life in the working of divine providence and keep their eyes off the lust, they sought quasi-Epicureanism. Rather than study original Tao-Way to philosophy-, they were interested in concrete things and arts. Such trend in the nobilities in Hanyang Castle was reflected in therir feminine view. Their ideal married couples were Zao Mingcheng(趙明誠) and Li Qingzhao, Zao Mengfu(趙孟俯) and Guan Daosheng(管道昇), or Qian Qianyi(錢謙益) and Liu Rushi(柳如是). The emotional demands toward their wives were not simply the physical beauty or womanly virtue, but artistic talent and erudition. If Heo Nanseolheon(許蘭雪軒) had lived in this period, she would have led a far more happier life. Actually Shin Wi apologized her for way of life, which was laughed at by moderate nobilities in late Chosun Dynasty. In the case of late Chosun Dynasty, it was impossible for the nobilities to find such ideal wives. Therefore, they naturally sought for kinyeo(妓女) who were excellent in poetry, painting, and instrumental music playing. The creative literary activities of kinyeo concubines, who were called Samhojeong Sisa(三湖亭詩社) or Uncho(雲楚) group, were originated from this background.
