한글편지에 나타난 순원왕후의 일상과 가족

국문 초록

본 연구는 純元王后의 한글 편지를 중심으로 순원왕후의 일상과 가족에 대해 논의하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 조선 왕실의 여성들은 평상시에 편지를 자주 주고받았던 것으로 알려져 있는데, 현재 남아 있는 자료는 그리 많지 않다. 다만 순원왕후가 金興根 등에게 보낸 편지 자료 약 58점이 규장각에 소장되어 있어, 본 연구에서는 이에 대한 내용 분석을 시도하고자 하였다. 순원왕후의 편지에 의하면 순원왕후의 건강은 비교적 양호한 편이었지만 남편인 純祖와 아들인 翼宗, 손자인 憲宗의 연이은 죽음으로 정신적 충격을 상당히 많이 받았으며, 이로 인해 우울증에 시달렸던 것으로 보인다. 그리고 이를 해소하는 과정에서 소설을 듣거나 가족들에게 편지 보내는 것을 즐겼던 듯하다. 때문에 편지에는 인척들의 안부와 죽음, 건강, 유배 등의 개인적인 내용과 당시의 정치적 쟁점에 대한 공적인 문제들이 다양하게 혼재되어 있다. 아울러 순원왕후와 안동 김문 간의 긴밀한 유착관계 및 왕실의 일원으로서 순원왕후가 안동 김문에게 느꼈을 거리감이 미묘하게 드러난다. 이처럼 편지에 순원왕후의 미묘한 심리적 정황이 드러날 수 있었던 것은 기본적으로 편지가 지극히 사적인 장르이기 때문이다. 따라서 공식적인 기록에서는 드러나지 않았던 순원왕후의 솔직한 내면 심리가 드러나고 있으며, 이를 통해 몇몇의 문헌 기록만으로 접근하였을 때 부딪쳤던 당시 정국에 대한 이해의 한계를 편지들이 어느 정도 보완해 줄 수 있게 되었다. 때문에 순원왕후의 한글 편지에 대한 분석은 그동안 다소 일방적으로 전개되어온 19세기 세도정치에 대해 보다 섬세한 접근이 필요하다는 것을 시사해 준다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study has an intention of discussing Queen Sunwon's daily life and family, focussing on details stated on Hangeul letters written by Queen Sunwon. It is known that women of the Royal Family in the Chosun Dynasty period had exchanged letters each other at their ordinary times. But there is no many letters reserved at present. Fortunately, the 58 letters that Queen Sunwon had sent to Heung Geun Kim have been kept in Gyujanggak. This study tried to analyze many things about Queen Suwon and her family through that letters. According to the letters of Queen Sunwon, her health was relatively fine. But her husband, Sunjo and grandson, Heonjong's death were happened in succession and their death were a great shock to her. She was suffering from hypochondria caused by the terrible events and seemed to enjoy writing letters to her family members or reading novels as a way to overcome her suffering. The letters are showing various subjects, i.e. individual things including greetings between relatives and their death, health, or exile, and official political issues in dispute. In addition, the letters are subtly revealing very close relationships between Queen Sunwon and the Family Andong-Kim and a sense of distance which Queen Sunwon felt from the Family Andong-Kim as a member of the Royal Family. The reason we can notice Queen Sunwon's detail psychological state from the letters is that the letters are basically belonging to personal genre. So, the letters are describing Queen Sunwon's frank inside mind which was not revealed on official records. They help us understand more and pass the limit to the political situation at the age only through a few official record. As the result, this analysis into the Hangeul letters written by Queen Sunwon is very suggestive of needs to delicately approach to Political in Power, which has been understood somewhat in one sided-method, in the 19th century.
