국문 초록

부부갈등이나 처처갈등이 중심 서사를 구성해가는 조선후기 국문장편소설에서 악녀의 형상화를 살펴보는 일은 작품의 핵심적인 주지와 서술자의 시각을 분석하는 중요한 작업이다. 이에 본고에서는 연작형 삼대록계 국문장편소설인 <조씨삼대록>의 악녀의 형상을 고찰하고 이러한 형상화가 작가의 치밀한 구상에 의해 조합되면서 소설 읽는 재미를 배가시키는 데에까지 이르렀음을 보았다. 그리하여 악녀의 악행의 동기, 남편의 가문과 인물형, 적국의 가문, 친정아버지의 성품, 시댁 식구들의 자질, 공모하는 주변인의 범주, 발각되는 경로, 심문 받는 과정, 발각 후의 행보 등의 세부적인 면에서 다각도로 변주되었음을 고찰하였다. 특히 이 작품에서는 악녀들의 악행이 긴 시간 동안 상당한 분량으로 지속되면서 긴장감을 고조시키고, 유모나 자객, 친정부모와 그 주변인 등과 공모함으로써 서사의 규모를 확장하고 현실성도 강화하는 효과를 낳았다. 한편, 악녀들은 서사에 등장할 때부터 악녀로 규정되는가 하면 대물림되기까지 하며, 군주였던 사람이 오랑캐의 왕비로 쫓겨나거나 강물의 요괴가 될 수밖에 없는 상황이 설정된다. 남성 악인은 용서 받고 교화되는 반면 악녀들은 철저히 응징되며, 핍박 받는 선한 여성의 모습을 통해 여성에게 바람직한 덕목으로 인내와 온화함, 정절 의식 등을 말하고 있다는 면에서 여성 억압적인 시각과 가부장제적 이데올로기가 짙게 깔려 있다. 하지만 여성 인물들이 자연스러운 감정을 표출하거나 하나의 상황에 대해 다양한 언술과 묘사가 이루어져 독자들이 객관적으로 판단할 수 있도록 했다는 면에서 양면적인 서술시각을 드러내었다.

영문 초록

The present paper examines the characteristic features in the depiction of the female antagonists in Jossisamdaerok, or the Three Generations of the Jo Family. Based on the examination, the paper concludes that these depictions are the result of the author's careful characterization, which adds to the entertaining aspect of the novel. The female antagonists commit a variety of evil deeds for quite a long time, repeatedly changing identities and names. A considerable amount of the novel is devoted to the acts of these femmes fatales, thereby creating tension in the story. There is an evil woman who manipulates her husband and in-laws by drugging them to switch the family's foster son with the wrong person, and there is another who conspires with a wet nurse, a killer, her parents or others to earn her husband's love. The elaborate depictions of these femmes fatales tend to enlarge the novel's narrative scope and strengthen the reality of the story. In this novel, female antagonists are described as being evil from the outset and eventually get harsh punishment, which is sometimes handed down to their next generations. On the contrary, male antagonists are often forgiven or rehabilitated. In terms that it tends to emphasize patience and amiability as virtues that women should possess, this novel reflects female-oppressive patriarchal views. However, its descriptive perspective also shows a degree of ambivalence in that a certain situation is described at length from various perspectives, encouraging its readers to have their own opinions or interpretations.
