도쿠진 요시오카의 작품에 관한 연구

국문 초록

서양미술사에서 아카데미즘이 확립된 이후 미술은 각각의 장르로 나뉘어져서 연구, 발전하였다. 시각미술은 크게 순수미술(Fine Arts)과 응용미술(Applied Arts)로 분류되고 순수미술은 회화, 조각, 판화, 영상 등의 독립된 교육 커리큘럼 안에서 고유의 미적 향수 및 테크닉을 발전시켰다. 응용미술분야 역시 산업화 이후 모더니즘까지 이어지는 흐름 속에서 산업 현장의 요구에 따라 제품 디자인(Product Design), 시각 디자인(Graphic Design), 공예(Craft) 등의 전공으로 분리, 발전하였다. 그러나 20세기 중반부터 불기 시작한 포스트모던 미술운동은 기존의 예술 장르 간의 구별을 흔들어 놓았고 이러한 새로운 철학을 바탕으로 미술은 미술관의 벽을 넘어서 거리에 나가 대중과 만나게 된다. 일상생활에서 사용되는 여러 오브제들이 미술 작품의 소재로 사용되면서 산업현장의 여러 소재들이 예술창작에 활용되기 시작한다. 이와 같은 새로운 미술운동은 섬유예술분야에서도 예외가 아니다. 인류 문명사와 함께 하는 가장 오래된 예술분야인 섬유공예에도 과학 기술의 발달에 따른 성능이 다양한 새로운 소재 개발이 활발히 도입되고 관객들의 참여가 늘어남에 따라 새로운 시대적 감성에 부합되는 디자인의 개발이 과제로 떠오르게 된다. 여러 분야의 기업들과 협력하여 하이테크(high-tec) 소재를 개발, 사용하며 독창적인 디자인 작품을 발표하고 있는 도쿠진 요시오카(Tokujin Yoshioka, 1967~)는 오늘날 가장 미래적인 디자이너 중 한 사람으로 평가받고 있다. 각 각의 제품디자인을 구현하기 위한 소재에 대한 집요한 탐구, 관객의 사용으로 제품이 완성되는 소통의 디자인 철학과 더 나아가 자연 현상의 느낌을 강렬하게 붙잡아 관객의 미적 체험을 유도하는 공간 설치 디자인까지 그의 작품세계는 실로 넓고 다양하며 오늘날 디자인이 짚어봐야 할 여러 문제들을 제기하고 있다. 본 연구는 패션과 제품디자인의 세계적인 기업들과 독창적인 작업을 하고 있는 도쿠진의 작품 세계를 새로운 섬유 소재 사용을 중심으로 재구성하여 섬유디자인 활용의 영역 확대를 연구하는 한편 그의 설치작품에서 관객들이 느끼는 자연현상의 생생한 경외감(sense of awe)을 감상과 함께 전달하여 자연현상에 바탕을 둔 그의 감성 중심적 예술관을 소개한다. 미래의 디자인은 형태 뿐 아니라 오감을 만족시키는 요소와 아이디어가 중요시 여겨질 것이며 디자인, 예술, 과학 장르의 융합과 실험을 통하여 만들어지는 작업들이 점점 많아질 것으로 예상된다. 본 연구를 통해서 새로운 부흥기를 맞이한 섬유디자인의 현 위치와 앞으로 나아가야 할 새로운 방향을 제시할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

Since academism was established in Western art history, the art began to develop into various genres to be studied. Visual art was largely divided into the fine arts and the applied arts. In its own independent curriculums, fine arts was developed into painting, sculpture, engraving and photography with its own techniques and aesthetics. From the Industrial Revolution in late 18th century to present, applied arts was also subdivided and advanced into product design, graphic design and crafts according to the demand of social needs. In mid-20th century, the Post-modern movement has begun. It has combined diverse artistic genre and encouraged artist to work together. Artworks became to exhibit in the public places outside of museums and met the viewers in direct. As artwork was close to the public, the common objects of our daily life and industrial materials were used as art object as well. It delivered new interpretation on the relationship amongst authors, art works and audience. Such a movement has strong influence on the field of Textile also. With fast development of technology, high-tech materials of textile replaced the natural materials of it. It brings the need of new aesthetics in textile art and design. The artistic world of Tokujin Yoshioka (1967~present) is thoroughly vast and diverse yet raises a number of issues that today's design focused on. With persistent exploration of materials for each product design and the communication with the audience through the use of product, Tokujin opened new ear of design. His space installation design induces aesthetic experience of the audience by intensely grasping the sense of natural phenomenon. This study aims to examine the world of Tokujin's art works, which has been conducting innovative works in various design fields. By reconstructing textile materials in his works and at the same time delivering vivid feelings from natural phenomena, it is designed to expand the scope of textile utilization as well as to encourage new and creative thinking along with an opportunity to appreciate his art works.
