모더니즘이 예술 장신구의 발생에 끼친 영향

국문 초록

장신구는 인간의 신체 가장 가까운 곳에 위치하며 그 역사를 인류와 함께 하여 왔다. 선사시대의 돌, 뼈, 조개껍데기로 만들어진 주술적 장신구로부터 귀금속과 보석을 사용한 환금성 장신구 그리고 현대에 들어와서는 예술장신구에 이르기까지 장신구는 시간과 장소에 따라 재료나 그 착용의 의미에 커다란 변화를 겪어왔다. 다시 말해서, 장신구는 그것이 속해있는 사회와 구성원(작가나 착용인)이 추구하는 목적에 따라 새로운 의미와 형식을 보여주고 있다고 할 수 있다. 20세기에 전반기를 대변하는 국제적 양식인 모더니즘은 기계시대에 적합한 기하학적 미의 기준으로 예술과 산업에 영향을 미쳤으며 특히 장식을 배재하고 기능을 중요시하는 바우하우스와 기계적인 아름다움을 찬양하는 아르데코 양식은 이전의 장신구와는 다른 개념의 단순하면서도 생산성 있는 조형의 장신구를 시도하게 하였다. 또한, 입체주의를 비롯한 추상주의, 초현실주의 그리고 구축주의 등에 속해서 활동하던 순수 예술 작가들이 장신구 작업을 통해 보여준 그들의 의식은 장신구 작가들에게 예술장신구라는 새로운 기운을 불러일으켰다. 즉, 모더니즘의 영향을 받은 장신구 작가들은 이제까지의 장신구와는 다른 개념의 새로운 예술장신구를 보여주게 된다. 스튜디오를 중심으로 작업하는 예술장신구 작가들은 이제까지의 장신구의 착용 목적이었던 장식적 의도, 부와 권력, 힘의 상징, 그리고 소유와 약속의 의미 등의 전통적 관습에서 벗어나 새로운 시대의 변화를 대변하고 작가의 의식을 표현하며 부유한 일부 계층의 전유물이 아닌 대중적인 장신구로의 변화를 모색하기 시작하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 모더니즘이 예술장신구의 발생에 끼친 영향에 대해 이해함으로서 예술 장신구가 시대의 특징과 작가의 의식을 반영하고 있음을 알고 현재 활동하고 있는 예술장신구 작가들 또한 시대를 보는 시선과 작가 관으로 키움으로서 이 시대를 대변 할 수 있는 예술 장신구의 새로운 방향을 제시 할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

Jewelry has been part of human history being placed nearest to human beings. Depending on time and place, from shamanistic ornaments made of stone, bone, shell to precious jewelry made of precious metal and gem stone including art jewelry using stone, wood, steel etc. jewelry has gone through major changes in terms of materials and its meaning of wearing. In other word, jewelry was given new meaning or form in accordance with the society or individual-manufacturer or wearer- it belongs. Rapid development of society and change of recognition in the early 20th century triggered new artistic movement which appeared in the jewelry sector as well. One of such phenomena was the appearance of art jewelry. Away from traditional practices of wearing to satisfy decorative desire, wealth and authority, symbol of power and ownership and promises, the purpose of wearing then, artistic jewelry intended to represent the change to new age, express idea of artist, transform as popular jewelry instead of exclusive possession of it by some rich class of people. From this time on, a jewelry became a sector that shows the inner mind of a wearer as a field of fine arts capable to communicate with the people to be shown by which distinguished from industrial decoration. This article is a study concerning the generation of art jewelry that has been carried out by many jewelry artists until present ever since its appearance after 20th century. In this article, it is to examine the modernism of 20th century being the background of art jewelry as well as the relationship between modernism and art jewelry. The design of modernism is the geometric aesthetics standard suitable for machinery age which influenced to art & industry specially Bauhaus and Art Deco style that eliminate decoration, rather put emphasis on function attempted new type of jewelry being simple & productive different from earlier one. Also ideas of cubism, abstractionism, surrealism, structuralism shown by fine artists through their jewelry works ignited a fresh energy to those jewelry artists. Due to influence of such modernism, those occupational jewelry artists initiated to develop a new genre of jewelry field and began to show the new meaning of jewelry through art jewelry.
