대학명성이 임금에 미치는 영향 분석

국문 초록

이 연구는 대학명성의 임금 효과와 사회경제적 계층 및 전공에 따른 임금 차이를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구에 활용된 자료는 한국고용정보원의 2009년「대졸자직업이동경로조사」와 중앙일보 2006 ~ 2010년 대학평가 자료이다. 대졸자의 임금에 미치는 개인과 대학 특성의 영향력을 동시에 고려하기 위하여 2수준의 위계적 선형 모형을 분석 방법으로 활용하였다. 또한, 대학명성이 주로 상위권 대학에 집중되어 있다는 점에 주목하여 연구 대상을 상위 32개 대학으로 한정하였다. 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 1-6위 대학졸업자는 7-12위 대학졸업자에 비해 약 5.3%, 13-32위 대학졸업자에 비해 약 8.5%의 임금을 더 받는다. 둘째, 개인의 사회경제적 계층에 따른 임금 효과를 분석한 결과, 대학명성의 임금 효과는 소득이 높은 가정의 자녀에게 더 크게 나타난다. 셋째, 전공에 따라 대학명성의 임금 효과가 달라지는지 분석한 결과, 교육 전공자는 대학명성의 임금 효과가 부적으로 나타났다. 이 연구는 대학명성의 임금 효과와 사회경제적 계층 및 전공에 따른 임금 차이를 다양한 각도에서 실증적으로 밝혔으며, 이러한 현상이 갖는 개인과 대학 차원에서의 의미를 탐색하고 개인의 합리적 선택과 고등교육기관의 교육적 노력, 노동시장의 채용문화 개선을 위한 정책적 시사점을 제공하였다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the wage gap effects of attending prestigious universities based on the level of their reputation, and how this varies across majors of different types and family background. This study mainly uses two data. This study makes 2-level data set from the Graduates Occupational Mobility Information Service and University Information Data from Joongang University Assessment Center. Using a hierarchical linear model, which distinguishes more precisely between the effects of individual factors and institutional factors on earnings, this study estimates the effects of attending prestigious universities on earnings of graduates from higher education. Even after controlling SAT score, TOEIC score and expenditure per student, strong evidence emerges of a significant economic return to attending more prestigious universities. This study also finds economically more earnings effects of prestigious universities for individuals from high income family, and less earnings effects of prestigious Universities for individuals who major in education. Therefore, this study suggests that wage premium of attending prestigious universities varies across family background and majors.
