초ㆍ중등 교과서에 나타난 노인의 이미지 분석

국문 초록

이 연구에서는 노인의 활동 공간, 행위, 사회적 관계 맥락을 중심으로 초ㆍ중ㆍ고 사회, 도덕, 실과(기술ㆍ가정) 교과서에 나타난 노인의 이미지를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 활동 공간의 측면에서 노인의 이미지는 사회 영역보다는 가정 영역, 도시 지역보다는 촌락 지역과 더 강하게 연관되어 있었다. 둘째, 행위의 측면에서 노인의 이미지는 주로 자기 계발 활동과 연계되어 있는데 비해, 직업 활동, 참여 봉사 활동 및 가사 활동 모습은 상대적으로 드물게 나타났다. 셋째, 사회적 관계 맥락의 측면에서 노인의 이미지는 '전통과 관행의 고수'보다는 '변화와 적응의 주체'로 나타나는 반면, '가족과 사회에 기여'하는 측면보다는 '돌봄과 부양의 대상'으로 나타나고 있었다. 전반적으로 초ㆍ중ㆍ고 교과서에 나타난 노인의 이미지는 사회 변화에 적응을 시도하지만, 공간적으로 가정 영역 및 촌락 영역과 긴밀히 연계되어 있으며, 가족과 사회에 기여하기보다는 다른 사회 구성원으로부터 돌봄과 부양을 받아야 하는 존재로 재현되고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 교과서에 나타난 노인에 대한 편향된 이미지는 노인에 대한 고정관념이나 부정적 편견으로 이어질 수 있다는 점에서 개선이 필요하다. 이와 관련하여, 향후 교과서에서 노인 관련 내용을 다룰 때, 각 교과별로 고령화 사회, 효의 의미, 가정에서 노인의 행위 등에 대한 새로운 해석과 시각이 필요함을 강조하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to analyze how the image of the aged is covered in social studies, ethics, and practical arts (technology and home economics) textbooks in elementary and secondary schools. For this purpose, a total of 57 textbooks (27 social studies textbooks, 15 ethics textbooks, and 15 practical arts textbooks) were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Three analysis perspectives were employed for this study: 1) the activity space of the aged, 2) the behavior of the aged, and 3) the social relations context of the aged. The main findings are as follows: Firstly, in terms of activity space, the image of the aged was more related with family life and rural society than social life and urban society. Secondly, in terms of behavior, the image of the aged was mainly linked to self-improvement behavior while cases of social participation and community service, vocational life, and family life were relatively few. Thirdly, in terms of social relations context, the image of the aged was more related to an agent of change and adaptation rather than to the keeper of tradition and custom, while they were found not to contribute to family and society but to need care and support from family and society. The overall image of the aged in school textbooks was representative of those people who did not contribute to family and society, but were closely linked to family and rural society and in need of care and support from both family and society while they tried to adapt themselves to social change. The skewed image of the aged in school textbooks should be corrected as it may lead to the creation of stereotypes for the aged or to a negative bias against the aged. Based on these findings, several suggestions have been proposed for reconstructing the image of the aged in social studies, ethics, and practical arts textbooks.
