국문 초록

이 연구는 종교 참여 노년들이 자신의 생애 경험을 어떻게 이야기하며, 종교를 통해 이러한 생애경험을 어떻게 해석하고 의미화 하는지, 그리고 이러한 경험에 대한 해석과 의미화 과정 속에서 어떻게 자신의 자아정체성을 형성하는가를 분석한다. 연구 방법은 생애사 분석 방법을 사용하였으며, 연구참여자는 서울 또는 경기도 지역에 거주하는 65세 이상 12명의 개신교 노인들이다. 참여자들의 고난에 대한 해석과 자아정체성을 기준으로 구분된 유형은 크게 세 가지이다. 유형 1은 고난의 원인을 자신의 그릇된 삶으로 인해 발생한 것으로, 고난은 자신의 그릇된 삶을 깨닫게 하기 위한 하나님의 인도이며, 훈련의 과정으로 해석하고, 고난의 극복을 통해 과거와 달라진 나라고 하는 자아정체성을 구성하고 있었다. 유형 2는 고난 극복이라는 결과에 대한 해석이 주로 나타났으며, 하나님의 은혜 가운데 속한 나라고 하는 자아정체성을 구성하고 있었다. 유형 3은 유형 1, 2와 달리 고난이 현재 진행형이라는 점에서 차이가 보인다. 이들 사례는 고난의 원인을 구체적 타자로 인해 발생, 지속되는 것으로 인식하고 있으며, 이에 따라 자아정체성도 타자와의 관계 속에서 개별적으로 다양하게 구성되고 있었다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes how the elderly who were involved in the religious activities, especially in the Protestant church, expressed their lifetime experience, how they interpreted and admitted it through the religion, and how they formed religious self-identities during the process of the interpretation and admittance. The method of life history research was used here to analyze their life stories. They consisted of 12 Protestants older than 65, who resided in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. Our finding shows that they were divided into three types on the basis of religious self-identities and the interpretation on hardships. Type 1 is that they regarded the cause of hardships as the effect of their past wrong living, thought that the God used hardships as the process of discipline to guide them in the right path, and had a self-identity that they were different from themselves on the past through overcoming hardships. Type 2 is that they mainly expressed the result of overcoming hardships and had a self-identity that they belonged to the God's mercy. Type 3 was different from the previous two, in that hardships were still ongoing. They ascribed the cause of hardships to other people and their self-identities were various and comprised independently in a relationship with other people.
