「왕조열전(王朝列傳)」의 文學的 性格과 史的 位相

국문 초록

이 논문은 「왕조열전」의 서지사항, 창작연대 및 작자, 창작배경, 작품의 구성 및 구조, 내용적 성격과 표현의 특성, 작품의 문학사적 위상 등을 통해서 그 문학적 성격을 규명하였다. 「왕조열전」은 충남대학교 '경산문고'에 소장된 단권 1책의 국문 필사본으로, 현재까지 학계에 보고되지 않은 희귀본에 속한다. 그런데 初頭部가 落失되어 현재 온전히 남아 있는 부분은 태종대의 末尾부터 숙종대의 말미까지 기록되어 있으며, 그 殘卷의 분량은 95면이다. 이 작품의 필체는 女筆 正字體로, 필사자는 국문 해독과 筆記에 능한 역사적 소양을 갖춘 婦女라고 추정된다. 「왕조열전」은 原典의 원작가가 숙종시대 文士로, 태조대부터 현종대까지의 역대 군왕의 행적을 서술한 것인데, 후에 영조시대 문사가 종전의 원전을 필사하고 덧붙여 자신이 숙종의 행적을 추가로 기술한 것으로 판단된다. 이 작품은 숙종대에 단종을 복위시키는 상황 속에서 조선조 역대 군왕의 행적을 미화하고 王統을 선명하게 기술하여 백성을 교화하고 민심을 고양하려는 의도에서 기술된 것으로 생각된다. 이 작품은 열전형식의 구조를 유지하면서 동시에 편년체적 특징을 공유하고 있다. 또 문체 및 표현적 특성으로는 궁중이나 사대부가의 규방에서 통용되었던 내간 및 수필, 소설 등에서 散見되는 문체와 상통하며 대화체를 활용하여 독자들로 하여금 극적 긴장감과 흥미를 유발하고 있다. 이 작품에 형상화된 등장 인물은 유형적인 특성을 보여 준다. 군왕들은 聖王, 賢君, 孝君, 廢主, 그리고 短命했거나 추존된 군왕 등으로 분류하여 그 특성을 드러내고 있으며, 妃嬪은 正妃ㆍ賢妃ㆍ不德ㆍ不義로 폐출된 왕비ㆍ失德한 희빈 등으로 기술하고 있다. 이 밖에도 다수의 후궁이나 세자빈도 유형화하여 개성적이고 생동감있게 묘사하고 있다. 왕자들의 경우 불우하고 비극적인 삶을 살았던 왕자들을 부각하여 형상화하고 있으며, 또한 臣僚들은 충신과 역신으로 대별하여 그들의 삶을 형상화하였다. 「왕비열전」은 조선조 역대 군왕과 왕비, 臣僚를 중심으로 한 일련의 史實에 대한 기존의 전통적 인식 및 평가를 계승하는 한편, 이를 창의적으로 형상화하였다. 이러한 사실의 문학적 형상화는 왕실이나 王族ㆍ종친들의 역사적 인식을 새롭게 하는데에 기여했을 것임은 물론, 京鄕의 식자층들에게도 군왕에 대한 역사적 인식과 평가의 안목을 계승하고 발전시키는 역할과 기능을 담당했다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This thesis studies the literary characteristic of the Biographies of Dynasty(왕조열전) tracing its bibliography, writing period and author, the writing background, the composition and structure, contents and the characteristic of the expression and considering the status of Korean literature from the historical point of view. The Biographies of Dynasty, which is one volume of Korean manuscript housed in 'Gyeongsan library'(경산문고) of Chungnam University, is a rare book which has not been known in the academic circles. But the forepart has been disappeared and there remains only the record from the back end of the king Taejong(태종) to the final part of the king Sukjong(숙종) with 95pages. The handwriting of this literary work is in the square style which seems to be written by a woman, therefore, the person who transcribed the book is thought to be a noble woman with capacity for interpretation along with historical knowledge. It is regarded that its original author belonged to the king Sukjong's period, who described the kings' deeds from king Taejo(태 조) to the king Hyeonjong(현종) and afterward a writer in the king Yongjo(영조) transcribed the previous original book and added the king Sukjong's legacy. It is thought that this book was written, glorifying the kings achievement in Joseon Dynasty(조선조) under the circumstance which was seeking Danjong's(단종) restoration by the king Sukjong to describe the Royal line obviously and enlighten the people and promote public sentiment. It maintains the typical structure of the biographies and features chronological form at the same time. Besides, the writing style and description have something in common with letters between women, essays, novels which had been used in women´s quarters of imperial court or gentry society and allows the readers to feel dramatic tension and curiosity through dialogic style. It can be said that the characters are embodied as typical characteristics. The kings are classed as a sage king, a wise king, a king who was a devoted son, a king dethroned, a short lived king, a king restored after his death. Queen consorts and royal concubines are portrayed as a legal consort, a wise consort, a consort dethroned due to immorality, a concubine lost to virtue and so on, including Crown Princesses standardized characteristically. In case of princes, especially the princes who had lived deprived lives stand out and subjects are also appeared comparing a loyal retainer with atreacherous. The Biographies of Dynasty describes a series of history focusing the kings, Queen consorts and royal concubines and subjects and evaluate it from traditional point of view, furthermore, expresses it creatively. It seems that the Biographies of Dynasty, the literary description of the history, contributed to renew the royal family's recognition of history, furthermore, also helped intelligent people inherit and develop historical recognition and estimation about the kings in the Dynasty.
