국문 초록

현재 한국 사회에 우울증은 만연해있고 해마다 증가 추세에 있다. 우울증은 지각, 판단, 기억, 인지, 사고, 태도 등에서부터 대인관계에 이르기까지 광범위하게 부정적인 영향을 미치며 최근 우리사회의 높은 자살률과도 연관이 있다. 이 연구에서는 최근 심각한 사회문제가 되고 있는 우울증을 포함한 기분장애의 유형, 실태, 그리고 원인에 대한 연구 동향에 대해 논의하고자 하였다. 기분장애란 현실적인 여건과는 맞지 않게 일정 기간 우울하거나 들뜨는 기분의 장애가 주문제로 나타나는 정신장애이며, 크게 단극성 장애와 양극성 장애로 분류되고 있다. 최근 기분장애의 원인에 대해서는 생활사건과 관련된 사회적 요인, 인지적 입장에서 보는 심리학적 요인, 바이러스나 유전자, 호르몬, 신경전달물질 등과 관련된 생물학적 요인 등이 논의되고 있다. 그러나 그 원인이 명확하게 규명되고 있지는 않은 만큼, 기분장애의 원인을 찾기 위해서 지향해야 하는 방향은 융합적 연구모델이 되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

Mood disorders are defined in terms of episodes-discrete periods of time in which the person's behavior is dominated by either a depressed or manic mood. Episodes of depression are defined by the same symptoms regardless of whether the person's disorder is unipolar or bipolar in nature. It should not be surprising that much of the literature on depression focuses on interpersonal loss and separation. From birth to death, our lives are intertwined with those of other people. We are fundamentally social organisms, and we feel sad when someone close to us dies or a relationship ends. Severe events are cleary related to the onset of depression. but they do not provide a complete account of who will become depressed. Many people who do not become depressed also experience. Presumably, those who become depressed are somehow more vulnerable to the effects of stress. Several psychological factors may contribute to a person's vulnerability to stressful life events. In the following pages, we will consider two principal areas that have received attention in the research literature: cognitive factors and social skills. Biological factors are also influential in the regulation of mood. Various studies suggest that genetic factors are somehow involved in unipolar and bipolar disorders, that hormonal abnormalities are regularly associated with depression, and that depression is associated with abnormalities in the activation of specific regions of the brain. Amygdala, the part of our brain is activated when we feel fear. Further, the circuit for cognitive control, encompassing anterior cingulate cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, was highly active while watching the Disney advertisements. In addition, diseases related to old age and other problems involving memory loss, are now being traced to possible damage to the hippocampus.
