A Semiotic Approach to de Man’s ‘Allegory’

국문 초록

드만에 따르면, 언어는 근본적으로 비유적 또는 수사적이며, 우리는 주어진 언어 기호를 문자적으로 읽어야 할지 비유적으로 읽어야 할지 결정할 수 없다. 알레고리의 메카니즘은 단어들이 언어외부의 대상을 지시할 수 없게 만들며, 따라서 그가 문법과 대조하여 ‘수사’라고 부르는, 언어내적 지시의 무한한 연쇄만 가능할 뿐이다. 알레고리는 심지어 텍스트내적 의미작용도 불가하게 하며, 따라서 알레고리는 궁극적으로 읽기불가능성의 알레고리로서 텍스트 전체를 이해하려는 모든 시도를 좌절시키는 장애물로 작동한다. 하지만 퍼스의 관점에서 보면, 언어외적 대상에 대한 지시가 가능하여 적어도 일시적으로 언어의 무한한 기호작용을 멈출 수 있다. 왜냐하면 언어외적 대상인 ‘역동적 대상’을 전제해야 언어내적 지시도 가능하며, 일반적 성향으로서의 의미인 ‘최종적 해석소’가 ‘역동적 대상’에 부합하여 실제적 의미가 될 수 있기 때문이다. 그리고 이때 해석자는 ‘집단적 경험’에 의지하여 그 의미의 타당성을 확보할 수 있다. 따라서 드만의 ‘알레고리’ 개념과 그에 따른 읽기불가능성은 설득력을 잃게 된다.

영문 초록

According to de Man, the structure of language is radically figural or rhetorical, and we cannot decide whether a given sign is to be taken literally or figuratively. The mechanism of allegory in language does not allow words refer to extra-textual objects. There can be only unlimited, intra-linguistic chain of references, which he calls ‘rhetoric’ as contrasted with grammar. Allegory even negates the signification of the intra-textual meaning, and, ultimately, there can be no meaning in any types in a text. Allegory is then ultimately allegory of the impossibility of reading, which states the structural obstacles of language against all attempts to comprehend a text as a whole. But from Peirce’s perspective, extra-linguistic referent is possible and cuts into the unlimited sign-interpretants process when the final interpretant corresponds to it. This is because he allows for dynamic object which the final interpretant would ultimately correspond to. The final interpretant in turn becomes a dynamic interpretant through recourse to ‘collateral experience,’ an encyclopedic store of knowledge about various aspects of reality. Therefore, we can say, referential or literal meaning is possible, and grammar is the basis for reading upon which figural meaning can be explored.
