국문 초록

‘무브먼트’라는 용어가 1950년대 영국문학계에 등장한 이래 이 용어는 주로 그 용법의 정당성과 관련되어 논의되어왔다. 그리고 이 용어의 사용이 암시하는 것처럼 ‘무브먼트’라는 이름의 문예운동이 실제 운동으로서 존재했는가, 그렇다면 이 용어가 지칭하는 문학이론과 그 창작이론이 적용된 실제 작품이 얼마나 존재하는가에 대해 회의적인 의견들도 많이 제시되었다. 이 논문은 이런 논의들과 관련하여 ‘무브먼트’라는 용어의 정당성을 의심하는 의견들에 대한 반론으로서 이 문예운동에 속했던 시인과 비평가들의 문예이론과 실제 작품을 분석함으로써 이 운동이 신고전주의적 시학으로써 이전 세대의 신낭만주의적 문예론을 대체, 극복하려는 경향을 가졌던 독립된 문예운동이었음을 입증하고자 한다. ‘무브먼트’의 이전 세대를 대표하는 시인으로서 딜란 토마스와 ‘무브먼트’의 대표 시인이자 비평가로서 도날드 데이비의 문예이론과 작품이 주로 분석된다.

영문 초록

Since its introduction into the English literary world, the term the Movement has been discussed widely mainly about its justification as a literary term supported by substantial works of theory and practice. For some critics the Movement was only the result of a commercial project deliberately planned by publishers. This paper tries to secure the substance for the term to rebut suspicious arguments regarding the legitimacy of the term by reviewing the neoclassical poetics of the Movement through, mainly, Donald Davie's critical works and poetry. To be a movement, a movement should have something in common that can provide the foundation for the justification of its existence. A movement can be a movement only when it demonstrates a common view of literature that makes the movement distinguished from other movements. In the case of the Movement, the distinctive literary view was neo -classical. To verify the neoclassical basis of the poetics of the Movement this paper analyzes their attack on their neo-Romantist predecessors like Dylan Thomas and T. S. Eliot and their preoccupation over the concept of 'poetry-as-abstraction.'
