국문 초록

한국어의 의성어 및 의태어는 전체형 중첩, 삽입형 중첩 및 접미사형 중첩의 세가지 유형을 모두 보여준다는 점에서 중첩현상의 연구에 매우 흥미로운 언어이다. McCarthy and Prince (1986)와 Lee and Davis (1993)를 비롯한 선행연구들은 운율제한이론에 근거하여 한국어의 중첩현상을 설명하고 있지만, 운율외성의 문제 이외에도 전체형 및 접미사형 중첩현상을 간과하고 있다는 한계점을 지니고 있다. 본 연구는 최적성이론에 입각한 운율형태론의 관점에서 선행연구들이 가진 문제점들을 극복하려고 시도한다. Edginess, Afix-to-Ft, Red=σ를 비롯한 10개의 보편제약을 가지고 한국어 의성어, 의태어에 나타나는 세 가지 유형의 중첩현상 모두를 제약서열의 차이로서 설명할 수 있음을 보인다. 이러한 분석의 결과는 하나의 언어 혹은 언어현상 내에도 다수의 소 문법들, 즉 동일한 제약들로 이루어진 서로 다른 제약서열들이 존재할 수 있음을 보여준다. 한국어의 다양한 중첩현상에 대한 본 연구는 최적성이론에 기반을 둔 운율형태론의 이론적 타당성을 보여주는 또 하나의 증거를 보여준다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Korean is an interesting language in that its ideophonic words present various types of reduplication including total, infixal and suffixal. Previous studies such as McCarthy and Prince (1986) and Lee and Davis (1993), though they account for Korean reduplication under prosodic circumscription theory, are subject to theoretical challenges with regard to the issue of extrametricality and the disregard of total and suffixal reduplication types. The present study instead attempts to provide a prosodic morphological solution within the framework of optimality (McCarthy and Prince 1993, 1994) to the difficulties that previous analyses must face. The present study shows that all three types of reduplication in Korean may be explained with the reranking of ten constraints featuring Edginess, Affix-to-Foot and Red=σ. The result of the present study suggests that several mini-grammars with different constraint rankings must be recognized within a language and possibly even within a specific linguistic process. In short, the present study serves to provide another piece of evidence for the theoretical validity of prosodic morphology couched within optimality theory.
