국문 초록

1354년 프랑스왕 장 2세가 피에르 베르쉬르에게 번역을 주문했던 티투스 리비우스의 『로마사』는 14세기의 문화적 변동과 정치적 변화가 맞물린 역사 텍스트로써 프랑스 정치문화와 관련하여 매우 중요한 사례를 제공하고 있다. 애초에 이탈리아에서 프란체스코 페트라르카와 란돌포 콜로나의 인문주의적인 발견(로마 고전의 재발견)의 대상이었던 티투스 리비우스의 『로마사』는 로마의 문화와 역사에 관심을 갖고 있던 프랑스왕 장 2세의 관심을 받았고 프랑스어로 번역되면서 프랑스의 정치현실 속에서 왕권의 문화자본 형성의 원천으로 기능하였다. 페트라르카의 동료인 피에르 베르쉬르의 프랑스어 번역은 내용의 차원과 언어라는 매체의 차원에서 당대 프랑스 왕정의 정치문화 전략을 잘 보여주고 있다. 먼저 내용의 차원에서 『로마사』는 교회와 성직자의 개입이 없이 인간 스스로의 덕목에 의해 자율적인 정치공동체가 유지되고 보전될 수 있다는 정치적 확신을 왕정에게 보장해 주었다. 언어라는 매체의 차원에서 로마사의 프랑스어 번역 자체와 새로운 어휘의 창안은 프랑스어에 국왕의 권위를 상승시키는 역할을 하였다. 이러한 정치전략은 프랑스 왕권에게 초월적인 교황권과 지방분권적인 지방귀족들에 대항해 프랑스 왕국에 대한 확고한 주권을 확립하려는 정치적 의도와 맞물린다. 나아가 이는 정치공동체로서의 프랑스 왕국의 정체성 형성을 지향하고 있다. 이상과 같은 현상은 당대에 변화해 가고 있던 다양한 문화적 현상들-세속어 문자문화의 발전, 고전의 재발견 등-에 대해 프랑스 왕권이 어떻게 재빠르게 이를 정치적 전략으로 활용하고 있었는지를 보여주고 있는 사례가 된다. 또한 이러한 정치전략으로서의 문화자본이 다시 문화적 헤게모니를 장악하면서 문화변동을 자극하고 있다는 점에서 중세 말 정치와 문화의 되먹임(feed-back) 관계에 대해 생각해 볼 기회를 제공한다.

영문 초록

The History of Rome, Ab urbe condita, of Titus Livius, which the John II the Good, the king of France, demanded Pierre Bersuire to translate in French, gives an very important example for understanding the political culture in 14th Century France, complicated with the cultural mutation and the political transformation. In the beginning, the works of Titus Livius was the object of humanist discovery(rediscovery of roman classics) executed by Frencesco Petrarca and Landolfo Colonna. It is soon interested by the king John the Good and, with the french translation, it functioned as a source of formation of the cultural capital of the kingship in the french political situation. The french translation of Pierre Bersuire, colleague of Petrarca, present well the french royal strategy in the dimensions of the content and of the medium of language. On the one hand, in the dimension of the content, it assured the french monarchy that the autonomous Respublica could be preserved and conserved by the human virtues without any intervention of the Church and of clerks. And, on the other, the translation itself of the history of Rome and the creation of new vocabularies by Pierre Bersuire contributed to the ascension of the royal authority in the domain of the French language. This political strategy is related with the royal political intention aiming to establish firmly the sovereignty over the Kingdom of France against the transcendental papacy and the centrifugal local nobilities. Moreover this intend to the identification of the kingdom of France as the unitary political community(respublica). These example present well how the french kingship applicate agilely the cultural phenomena as results of the various cultural mutation - for examples, the development of the vernacular literacy and the rediscovery of the ancient classics, for the political purpose. Finally, this cultural capital as the political strategy assuring of the royal cultural hegemony give an opportunity to think about the relation of feed-back between politics and culture in the Late Middle Ages.
