반종교개혁의 시대?

국문 초록

이 논문은 독일 역사서술에 있어서 1555년부터 1648년까지 이르는 한 세기의 핵심적 성격을 특징짓기 위해서 사용되었던 “반종교개혁의 시대”라는 시대명칭의 적합성 여부를 두고 일어난 역사가들의 논쟁을 다루고 있다. 랑케를 중심으로 하는 프로테스탄트 역사가들에 의해서 사용되어진 시대명칭으로서의 반종교개혁의 개념은 가톨릭교회의 내부적 개혁을 등한시 하였고, 가톨릭에 의해서 주도되어진 반종교개혁 운동의 폭력성을 지나치게 강조하였다. 이에 대한 반발로 예딘을 중심으로 하는 가톨릭 역사가들은 그 시대에 적합한 시대명칭으로서 가톨릭 개혁과 반종교개혁이라는 이중 개념을 제안하였다. 이 개념은 가톨릭 개혁의 독자성을 강조하고 반종교개혁 개념의 폭력성을 희석시켰다. 반종교개혁 개념을 두고 진행된 기존의 역사적 논의가 종교와 정치의 연관성을 포착하지 못했다는 인식에 기초하여 20세기 중후반 경부터 대안적인 시대명칭들이 제시되기 시작하였다. 신앙전쟁의 시대, 교파의 시대 또는 교파화 과정의 시대 등의 시대명칭들이 종교와 정치의 연관성을 염두에 두고 16세기 중반부터 17세기 초반까지의 시대를 특징짓는 시대명칭의 대안으로 제시되어 왔고, 반종교개혁은 더 이상 시대명칭으로 부적절하다는 입장이 관철되었다.

영문 초록

The theme of this article ist the historical debate in the german historiography about the term ‘Gegenreformation(Counter-Reformation)' as an age-name of a century from 1555 to 1648. The age-name of Gegenreformation which Leopold von Ranke coined and the german protestant historians mainly used ignored the aspects of inner reforms of the Catholic church and emphasized one-sided the violence of Gegenreformation which the Catholic church carried out. Against this interpretation was proposed by the catholic historian Hubert Jedin the dual concept ‘Katholische(Catholic) Reformation and Gegenreformation' as an alternative age-name. This concept emphasized the peculiarity of the reforms of catholic church and diluted the violent character of Gegenreformation. But this debate on the term Gegenreformation failed to capture the connection between the religion and the politic. Therefore, from the 1970s, the alternative concepts which focused on the connection between the church and the modern state was proposed: The age of the Glaubenskämpfe(religious wars), the age of the Konfession(confession), the age of Konfessionalisierung (confessionalization) etc. It is now agreed that the term Gegenreformation as an age-name is no more valid.
