A.S.C 영상자료를 통한 한국전쟁 연구의 새로운 가능성

국문 초록

2000년대 들어 한국 현대사 분야는 새로운 자료의 발굴과 이를 이용한 연구가 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 필자는 신자료 발굴이라는 측면에서 최근 등장한 “영상역사학”에 관심을 가졌다. 특히 영상역사학의 연구 방법과 대상에 관해 관련 학계의 다양한 논의가 필요하다고 느끼는 중에 한림대학교 아시아문화연구소가 소장하고 있는 ‘미육군통신대(Army Signal Corps) 촬영 한국전쟁 동영상(A.S.C 영상)’을 주목하였다. 이 논고에서는 아시아문화연구소 소장 한국전쟁 동영상 자료의 가치와 내용을 검토하여 한국전쟁 분야의 새로운 연구 가능성을 찾아보고, 아울러 ‘영상 역사 기록물’에 대한 심도 있고 체계적인 연구를 통해 이 기록물이 다양한 방면에서 활용되기를 기대한다. A.S.C 영상 자료의 가치와 내용 검토를 통해 첫째, 미공개 동영상의 존재를 밝혀 새로운 사료 발굴이 가능하다는 점, 둘째, 문헌자료에 대한 보완 및 명징이 가능하다는 점, 셋째, 평면적 사료의 입체화가 가능하다는 점을 알 수 있고, 이로써 한국전쟁 연구에 있어 기존 문헌 기록을 통한 연구와 A.S.C 영상자료의 연구가 상호보완적 상승효과를 낼 수 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 한편 영상자료는 열람하기가 쉽지 않다는 점과 촬영자나 편집자의 시각에 의해 1차로 걸러진 자료라는 한계가 있다. 그러나 디지털 기술과 아카이브 작업의 발달로 탐색 및 열람의 편의성이 높아지고 있고, 촬영자가 의도하지 못한 여러 정보를 담고 있는 영상 자료를 연구자의 관심에 따라서 다양하게 분석할 수 있는 장점도 가지고 있다. 가능한 대로 동원할 수 있는 문헌 기록은 관련된 영상자료를 참고할 수 있다면 더욱 설득력 있는 증거로 빛을 볼 수 있을 것이다. 또한 영상 자료는 언제, 무슨 일이, 어떤 방식으로 일어났는지, 그리고 그 시대를 살았던 일반 사람들은 어떤 식으로 반응했는지에 관한 정보를 얻는 데 문헌 기록으로는 담지 못할 만큼 상세하게 상황을 알아볼 수 있다는 강점을 가지고 있기도 하다. 이상의 고찰을 통해 약 200시간이라는 방대한 분량의 ‘영상 역사 기록물’에 대해 앞으로 보다 심도 있고 체계적인 연구가 진행되어야 할 가치와 필요성은 확인되었다고 생각된다.

영문 초록

With the turn of the century, “visual history" is attracting more and more attention amid growing concern for the newly-revealed data about the modern history of Korea and the related research. When I felt the need to discuss the method and range of visual history, it is very natural that I come to give special attention to the image materials of the Korean War(the ASC video materials) which were filmed by the 'US Army Signal Corps' and are now kept in Hallym University Institute of Asia Culture Studies. It is to be wished that elaborate scrutiny into these video materials opens up the new research potential for the Korean War, leading accordingly to in-depth researches into ‘visual historical records’ in a variety of study domains. As a result of our consideration, the advantages that the ASC video materials can bring about appear as follows ; firstly, reviewing the undisclosed image materials makes it possible to bring new historical data into light ; secondly, it supplements and clarifies the existing historical literature ; thirdly, it contributes to making rather flat records three-dimensional. Furthermore, it is assured that the research of the ASC video materials can be fairly complementary to that of the existing historical records. Meanwhile, there are also limits to some degree in that it is not easy for the general public to access to these materials and they were filtered by the views of the photographer and editor involved. However, with the development of digital technology and archive processing which improve the process of data inquiry and reading, it is getting more convenient to analyze in a variety of ways according to researchers’ concern these video materials, which contain much of information unintended as well. References to these materials will enhance persuasive powers of the existing literature records now available. Their advantage of getting concrete information about when and in what way something happened and about how ordinary people responded to it, goes far beyond the scope of literature data. These considerations surely prove that these ‘video historical records’ of vast proportions are definitely worth more thorough and systematic research.
