寒洲 李震相의 『中庸』分節說

국문 초록

이 글은 19세기 경상도 학자 李震相의 『중용』분절설이 종래의 설과는 다른 점에 주목하여 그 내용과 특징을 살펴보고 경학사적 의의를 논한 것이다. 이진상은 기호학파 韓元震의 4대절설을 비판하면서 四支六節說을 주장하였는데, 「中庸章句序」의 ‘支分節解 脈絡貫通’에 근거를 두고 있다. 그는 人身에 四支ㆍ六節이 있다는 관점으로 지분절해를 풀이하고, 程子의 설에 의거 一理―萬事―一理로 혈맥관통을 해석하였다. 그는 子思가 主理에 근거하여 『중용』을 지었다고 보면서 전체의 논지가 理를 말한 것으로 파악하였다. 이진상은 자신의 설을 「中庸四支六節圖」로 그렸는데, 『중용』의 요지인 誠을 주자처럼 樞紐로 보지 않고, 命脈으로 보았다. 이는 지분절해에만 천착하지 않고 맥락관통까지 겸하여 全體에 나아가 해석한 것이다. 그는 4대지설만 주장하거나 6대절설만을 고집하는 사람들의 주장에 대해 일일이 논박하며 변론하고서, 마지막으로 ‘大支만 있고 大節이 없으면 運用할 수 없고, 대절만 있고 대지가 없으면 統攝할 수 없다’고 하여, 全體에 초점을 둠으로써 統攝과 運用의 妙合을 추구하였다. 이러한 이진상의 사지육절설은 기호학파 한원진의 「중용도」가 4대절설만을 주자의 만년 정설로 고집하는 것에 대한 반박으로 나온 것이다. 그는 한원진의 「중용도」에 대해 하나하나 비판하였는데, 현실세계에 바탕을 둔 一身의 運用과, 分殊가 아닌 理一의 관점에서 統攝을 추구한 것이 핵심이다. 그가 一理를 강조하는 논조는 그의 心卽理說과 맥락을 같이 한다. 그는 이런 통섭의 논리로 一理를 강조하고, 心統性情의 관점에서 心의 運用을 강조하여 主宰性을 내세웠다. 이진상이 4대지설과 6대절설을 통섭과 운용의 관점으로 해석한 것은 전대미문의 새로운 설이다. 이 설이 비록 전국적으로 뜨거운 논쟁을 불러일으키지는 못하였지만, 적어도 경상우도 지역에 뿌리는 내린 寒洲學團에서는 중요한 학설로 수용되었다. 예컨대 許愈ㆍ郭鍾錫ㆍ姜永墀 등이 그 영향을 받아 새로운 도표를 그리고 해석한 것을 보면, 『조선시대 『중용』해석의 대미를 장식한 주요한 사안에 해당한다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

Taking a note of differences between Zhongyong bunjeol theory by Lee Jin-sang, a scholar from Gyeongsang Province in the 19th century, and the previous theories, this study set out to examine its content and characteristics and discuss its significance in Jingxue history. Lee argued for sajiyukjeol theory, criticizing 4deajeol theory by Han Won-jin of Giho School based on ‘jibunjeolhae maekrakgwantong’ of Zhongyongjangguseo. He interpreted jibunjeolhae from a perspective that there are saji·yukjeol in the human body and hyeolmaekgwantong through ilri-mansa-ilri based on the theory of Chengzi. Believing that Zisi wrote Jingxue based on juri, he understood that the entire point of argument was about ri. Lee drew Zhongyong sajiyukjeoldo to depict his theory, regarding seong, the essence of Jingxue as myeongmaek instead of chunyu like Zhuzi. It is because his interpretations included maekrakgwantong and further the whole rather than sticking to jibunjeolhae. He also refuted and debated every single person that argued for only either 4daeji theory or 6daejeol theory. He said, “There is no unyong only with daeji but with no daejeol. There is no tongseop only with daejeol but with no daeji,” focusing the whole and pursuing myohap between tongseop and unyong. Lee developed his sajiyukjeol theory in a process of refuting Han Won-jin, who obstinately claimed in his Zhongyongdo that only 4daejeol theory should be the all-time established theory of Zhuzi. He criticized Han's Zhongyongdo in each and every way with a focus on the pursuit of tongseop from the perspective of the unyong of ilsin based on the real world and riil. His tone of argument that emphasized ilri was in the same context as his simjeukri theory. He insisted on jujaeseong, highlighting ilri with such a logic of tongseop and the unyong of sim from the perspective of simtongseongjeong. Lee's interpretations of 4daeji theory and 6daejeol theory from the perspective of tongseop and unyong were unprecedented. Although his theory failed to stir hot controversy across the nation, it was at least accepted as an important theory by Hanjuhakdan that settled down in Gyongsangwoo Province. Considering that Heo Yu, Gwak Jong-seok and Kang Yeong-ji tried new charts and interpretations under its influence, it is safe to say that his theory was an important case that embellished the finale of Zhongyong interpretations in Joseon.
