국문 초록

불성사상은 초기 중국불교의 역사적 전개에서 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하는 개념이다. 晋宋 교체기에 이르러 중국불교의 사상적 관심은 『般若經』 중심의 般若中觀學에서 『涅槃經』 중심의 涅槃佛性論으로 전환하였으며, 이후 불성에 대한 논의는 자연히 어떻게 성불할 것인가의 실천수행론과 맞물려 전개되었다. 구체적인 수행방법에 대한 논의에 앞서 먼저 성불론의 이론적 토대로서 불성의 근거에 대한 논의가 활발하게 진행되었다. 『涅槃經』에 대한 南朝 시대 涅槃師들의 주석 모음집인 『大般涅槃經集解』에서는 佛性에 대한 논의가 집중적으로 다루어지고 있다. 따라서 『涅槃經』 및 『集解』는 중국불교 초기의 佛性사상을 이해하는 데 매우 중요한 자료가 된다. 『涅槃經』에서는 성불의 가능성에 대한 논의의 일환으로 불성에 대한 因果적 해석이 전개되었으며, 불성에 대하여 기본적으로 因, 因因, 果, 果果의 네 가지로 파악하였다. 『集解』에서는 불성을 두 종류의 因으로써 설명하였는데, 正因과 緣因, 生因과 了因, 正因과 了因, 緣因과 了因이 그것이다. 이 가운데 正因과 錄因이 2종 因의 기본이 된다. 본 논문에서는 正因佛性과 緣因佛性을 중심으로 『集解』에 나타난 열반사들의 불성의에 대해 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

The idea of Buddha-nature played a very important role in the historical development of early Chinese Buddhism. During the early years of 5thcentury, the doctrinal interest of Chinese Buddhism moved from the study of the notions of Prajñāand Mādhyamaka to the study of those of nirvana and Buddha-nature, subsequent development of the discussions on Buddha-nature becoming involved accordingly into the theory of actual practice in relation with the problem of how to become a Buddha. Prior to the discussion on the method of particular practice, however, there first developed a lively discussion on the basis of becoming a Buddha, as the foundation of the theory of becoming a Buddha. In the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, there arose a causal interpretation on Buddha-nature as a way of discussing the possibility of becoming a Buddha. From such a causal interpretation on Buddha-nature, there developed the thought of taking refuge in the Three Jewels within each of us. The above discussion on Buddha-nature in early Chinese Buddhism directly influenced the studies of the Three Treatises, the Treatise on the Ten Stages Sutra(the Daśabhūmikasūtra-śāstra), and the Huayan Thoughts, constructing an important the oretical foundation for the subsequent development and evolution of the thoughts of the Tiantai and Chan Schools that emphasize actual practice.
