청대 팽소승(彭紹升)의 화엄염불론과 법신설

국문 초록

중국불교에서 정토법문은 다른 불교 전통들과 활발히 교류하고 결합한다. 이런 교류와 결합을 통해서 새로운 이론과 전통이 출현하기도 한다. 다른 시대에 비해 불교 연구가 미약하다고 평가되는 청대(淸代)에 정토법문만은 크게 발전한다. 팽소승같은 거사는 정토법문과 화엄사상의 관련에 주목하고, 두 전통의 연대를 모색한다. 그는 『화엄경』이 정토법문을 지향하고 있음을 주장한다. 이때 팽소승은 화엄학에서 중요하게 등장하는 법신 개념을 응용한다. 그는 정토법문에서 주로 거론하는 아미타불이 아니라 법신불인 비로자나불을 주된 염불수행의 대상으로 삼는다. 아울러 염불수행을 통해서 지향하는 것은 아미타불이 있는 서방극락이 아니라 비로자나불이 언제나 존재하는 법계 혹은 화장세계임을 말한다. 이는 극락왕생의 공간을 미래의 다른 세계가 아니라 현재의 이 세계로 돌려놓는 역할을 했다.

영문 초록

In Chinese Buddhism, the Pure Land teachings actively interacted and were integrated with other Buddhist traditions. At times, new theories and traditions emerge through these exchanges and integrations. During the Qing dynasty, a period in which Buddhism was viewed as relatively weak compared to other historical periods in China, the Pure Land teachings managed to develop substantially. Peng Shaosheng, a householder and scholar of Buddhism of Qing Dynasty, paid attention to the relationship between the Pure Land teachings and the philosophy of the Huayan School and sought solidarity between the two traditions. He argued that the Huayan Jing, meaning the Flower-adorned Sutra, is oriented toward Pure Land teachings. In so doing, he employed the concept of Dharma-body that emerged prominently in the Huayan School. In lieu of Amitabha that was often brought up in Pure Land Buddhism, he used Vairocana as the object of Buddhist recitation practice. Also, he said that the goal of the Buddhist recitation practice was not to reach the Pure Land in which Amitabha resided, but the Dharmadhatu or the Lotus Treasury World in which Vairocana always existed. This line of thought played the role of seeking the space of peace and happiness not in the other world that exists in the future, but in this world of the present.
