금속 옻칠기법의 역사적 고찰과 조형성 분석연구

국문 초록

옛 유물을 살펴보면 수천년이 지났지만 뛰어난 보존상태를 지닌 유물들을 찾아볼 수 있다. 이는 생활용품이나 농기구로 주로 사용되었던 나무의 내구성을 보완하기 위해 개발한 재료인 옻칠을 나무나 금속표면에 적용하여 사용성과 보존성을 높이는 역할로 사용되었으며, 이는 옻칠의 사용이 실생활에 깊이 관여했음을 짐작할 수 있었다. 옻칠의 사용은 삼국시대부터 금속소재 유물들에 적용된 것들이 발굴되기 시작하며, 통일신라 시대와 고려시대에 조형성과 장식성을 지닌 유물로 나타나고 있다. 옻칠의 시문방법 중, 본 연구에서는 금속 재료를 사용한 옻칠 기법에서 평탈과 평문기법의 역사적 고찰과 조형성 연구하고자 한다. 평탈공예는 삼국의 칠기 전통과 당의 선진기술이 융합된 대표적인 공예 장식기법 가운데 하나로, 당시 최고의 재료였던 금,은과 옻칠을 이용하여 만든 수준 높은 공예품이다. 본 연구의 목적은 오늘날엔 거의 잊혀진 문화가 되어버린 평탈기법의 뛰어난 조형성 및 역사적 의미를 연구하고 이를 바탕으로 추후 평탈기법의 현대적 기법 활용의 밑거름으로 삼고자 한다.

영문 초록

We can find artifacts from the Prehistoric or Bronze Age that are well preserved even though they were made thousands years ago. For example, in 1988, a number of tomb relics such as bronze ware, ironware and lacquer ware were excavated together with a wooden coffin in the Tomb No. 1 in the Dahori historical site in Changweon Gyeongnam, which is an ancient tomb of the formative period of the ancient kingdoms. Their perfect conditions surprised not only researchers but also the general public, and were due to the traditional lacquer technique, which was developed to strengthen the durability of wood mainly used for daily or farming tools. Lacquer was applied to wooden or iron surfaces to increase the usability and preservability of farming tools and armaments. This indicates that the use of lacquer painting was deeply rooted in daily life. The use of lacquer painting is found in unearthed metal relics from the Three Kingdom Period and in copper mirrors and brassware with ornament and formative qualities from the Unified Shilla Period and the Goryeo Period. Among the more than 20 techniques of lacquer painting, Pyeongtal and Pyeongmun techniques – two techniques of the metal-based lacquer painting such as Pyeongtal, Pyeongmun and inlaying – will be considered and analyzed from the historical and formative approach. The Pyeongtal craft is one of the most famous craft decoration techniques, where the traditional lacquer of the Three Kingdoms was combined with advanced techniques of the Tang Dynasty. It is a superior craftwork made of gold, silver and lacquer - the best materials of the era. The decorative technique was greatly favored not just in Shilla but also in China and Japan. The purpose of this study is to examine the advanced formativeness and historical significance of the Pyeongtal technique, which is from a long forgotten past recognized by only a few. The author hopes that this study can lay the groundwork for the rebirth of the Pyeongtal technique through modern techniques in the future.
