근대 대학의 형성: 칸트의 이성의 대학에서 훔볼트의 학문의 자유 대학으로

국문 초록

이 글을 읽는 독자는 십중팔구 대학 교수(정규직이든 비정규직이든)이거나 학생으로서 대학의 구성원일 것이다. 이 글을 쓰는 필자 역시 대학구성원이다. 그렇다면 우리가 속한다고 믿는 대학은 어떤 의미에서 대학일까? 구조조정 대상이 되지 않기 위하여 취업률을 조작하는 대학, 기업 실무에 맞춘 인재를 양성하는 대학, 대학구성원들의 총장 선출권이 없어진 대학, 학문의 근본인 인문학이 위협받고 있는 대학, 이런 대학을 과연 대학이라고 할 수 있을까? 이 글은 몰락해가고 있는 현재의 대학을 점검하기 위한 글이다. 그러나 이 글은 현재의 대학을 직접 다루고 있지는 않다. 이 글은 대학이 무엇인지를 확인하기 위해 초창기 대학의 형성을 우선 다룬다. 그 다음 근현대 대학의 규범이었던 베를린 대학의 설립을 가능하게 하였던 칸트와 훔볼트의 대학에 대한 논의를 다룬다. 결론 부분에서는 현대의 대학이 어떤 몰락의 과정을 겪고 있는 지를 다룬다. 이 글은 일종의 대학의 역사이기도 하지만 단지 간략히 줄인 대학의 역사는 아니다. 이 글은 대학이 어떻게 외부 권력의 보호를 받으면서도 외부 권력으로부터 자율적 학문공동체의 위상을 지켜왔는지를 다루고 있다. 결론에 논의하는 대학의 몰락은 이런 자율적 학문공동체가 붕괴되고 있음을 말한다.

영문 초록

The university is the autonomous community of teachers and students in its original sense. The history of universities demonstrates that the university has maintained its autonomy, sometimes thanks to the support and protection of outer authorities, sometimes struggling with their threats. The foundation of the University of Berlin as an ideal model of the modern university was the outcome of the university’s effort to keep the autonomy of the university. This essay traces the developmental ideas for the University of Berlin by reading Kant’s Conflict of the Faculties and Humboldt’s “On the Spirit and the Organizational Framework of Intellectual Institutions in Berlin.” Kant’s Conflict of the Faculties is a defense of the university’s autonomy from the outer authority of government. It is also an argument for the leading role of the faculty of philosophy, or humanities, in the university’s pursuit of truth. According to him, the division of the university into the higher faculties of theology, law, and medicine and the lower faculty of philosophy necessarily brings about the conflict between them since the higher faculties are authorized by the government for the public well-being while the lower faculty is authorized by reason for the truth itself. Kant’s argument is that the lower faculty is responsible to criticize the higher faculties on the basis of reason so that the higher faculties are not erroneous. Thereby, he argues, the lower faculty has to lead the university in its pursuit of truth. Humboldt develops Kant’s argument into a practical idea for the ideal university in his essay. Humboldt’s essay is a blueprint for the foundation of the University of Berlin, the ideal model of the modern research university. Humboldt’s idea of the university is the university of academic freedom in teaching as well as in learning, from which the intellectual and spiritual development of the nation can be expected. The University of Berlin with its proven academic achievement in its history has played the leading role of the modern research university around the world. However, the ideal of the modern research university embodied in the University of Berlin has been abused with the business-oriented adoption of the model in American universities. American universities are run like business corporations for the corporate capital, which is the very opposite to the idea of the university as the autonomous community of scholars in pursuit of truth. The influence of American universities with the help of the American political and economic power on the universities in the rest of the world is now ruining the very idea of the university around the world. The university is now in ruins.
