국문 초록

박태원은 서구모더니즘 문학의 우수한 성과가 조선에 들어오고 예전의 계몽적인 담론, 그리고 좌익의 방향이 좌절되고 문학정신가치에 대한 새로운 탐색과 가치정립이 필요하였던 1930년대에 활약한 작가이다. 서구현대문학이 조선현대작가들의 창작에 준 영향과 계발은 실로 거대한바 조선문학이 그로 인해 얻은 언어실험, 서사혁명 및 그와 관련된 기정의 예술에 대한 돌파의식 등을 고려하여볼 때 그것은 혁명성을 띄었다고 하여도 과분하지 않다. 박태원은 서사풍격과 서사형식면에서는 서구화한 소설에 다가갔으나 내용적으로는 그에 합쳐질 수 없었다. 그는 이상의 문학에서 보여지는 모더니즘적인 감각, 그리고 좌익문학에서 보여지는 이념화의 경향 모두를 피해가면서 현대 도시시민문학의 새로운 길을 개척하여 나갔다. 그는 자기의 작품속에 “민간”의 의미를 담아냄으로써 주류적인 문화공간외에 새로운 천지를 개척하였다. “민간”에는 주류와 대응되는 정신세계와 공간이라는 특수성이 부여되어 있었고 보다 중요한 것은 그것이 개성과 자유의 재체, 본원과 이상의 상징으로 인정될 수도 있다는 점이다. 박태원의 작품속에는 원생태적인 시정인물과 도시민간사회의 풍속화면이 그려져 있었고 민간특유의 자재로움과 활력과 일종의 관용정신이 있었다. 한마디로 박태원은 민간을 자유적사상의 원천으로 삼은 것이다. 박태원은 서구모더니즘문학과 조선사회의 도시민간문화라는 이 두가지 당시에 활력으로 넘치는 문학의 길을 모두 외면하지 않았다. 그의 창작에서 이런 두가지 요소는 상호간 교착되거나 혹은 제각기 기울어지기도 하였는데 그러므로 그의 작품은 두가지 계열을 이루었다고 할만하다. 그 당시나 지금에 이르기까지 평론가들은 흔히 박태원의 창작을 “선봉문학”과 세태문학의 범주에 넣고 탐구하고자 하였다. 그러나 우리는 이 두가지 범주가 모두 박태원의 작품의 독특성과 풍부성을 수용하기 어렵다는 것을 알수 있다. 서구문학의 영향과 시대조류의 자극은 박태원으로 하여금 남을 모방하도록 한 것이 아니라 자기를 발견하도록 한 것이며 자기특유의 세계를 발견하도록 한 것이다. 그는 자각적으로 자기의 창작을 도시민간의 기초위에 발전시키고자 하였다. 박태원이 박태원으로 될 수 있는 독특성은 이로서 구축되어진 것이다.

영문 초록

In 1930s, the outstanding achievements of western modernism had entered into Korea’s the literary circles. The preceding enlightenment and Left wing’s exploration had suffered a setback which exposed the spiritual value of literature under more examination and scrutiny. Against this backdrop, Park Tewon was very active during this age. At that time, the impact and inspiration of western modern literature onto Korea had been huge and profound. It would not be overstatement if we called it revolutionary from the prospective of language, narrative and the breakthrough of stereotyped art forms. Park Tewon’s narrative became more western European in style and form but the contents and spiritual essence were not identical. He refrained from the extreme modernism visible in Lee shang’s literature and resisted left wing literature’s ideological tendency. He blazed a new trail for modern urban residents’ literature. Park Tewon demonstrated “folk” significance in his own works, breaking a new ground beyond mainstream literature. Independent of the mainstream’s spiritual world, “folk” could be deemed more as the vehicle of individuality and freedom and origin of ideals. Brimming with characteristic easiness and vitality of folk world and a spirit of tolerance, Park Tewon’s works depicted unpolished common folks and the physiognomy of civic world. In a word, Park Tewon viewed the folk world as the wellspring of free thinking and lives’ vigor. Park Tewon brought modernist literature in Western Europe and folk culture in Korean society, which were the most dynamic culture in that period, into his own writings. He interlaced the two cultures with each other, or made them independent from each other in his writing, which indicated that his works are two kinds of series. His work One Day Life of Novelist Guboshi belonged to vanguard literature of strong exploratory, while his another work Scenery of Riverside emphasized the reflection and expression of folk experience. So far, critics used to attempt to study his works in a mode of vanguard literature and the literature about the ways of the world. However, we knew that the two domains could not include the uniqueness and varieties. Strong western modernism did not make Park Tewon follow it and he did not imitate other writers, instead, he found his own world and root of writing art. He consciously put his focus on folk experiences, and tried to create tradition of civil novels. All of this made Park Tewon unique and irreplaceable.
