식민도시 경성과 트로이의 목마

국문 초록

『청춘송』은 경성의 대표적 번화가인 남촌 일대를 산책(‘혼부라’)을 통해 본격적으로 묘사한다는 점에서 박태원의 실질적인 ‘산책자 텍스트’라 할 수 있다. 이 작품은 두 쌍의 주요인물들이 동시간대에 각각 경성 시내 일대를 산책하는 것을 주요 서사로 삼고 있다. 이 작품에서 주로 활용되는 병렬 편집 기법은 작품 전체의 위계적 질서(가부장제, 제국주의)를 교란시키는 한편으로 그들의 이동 경로가 즉각적으로 파악되기 어렵게 한다. 식민도시는 제국의 중심인 메트로폴리스와는 본질적으로 다르다. 따라서 메트로폴리스에 기반한 기존 담론으로 식민도시 경성을 분석하는 것은 그리 적절하지 않다. 메트로폴리스가 주변부 식민지의 물적ㆍ인적 자원을 자기장적인 힘으로 중앙에 집적시킨다면, 경성 등의 식민도시는 식민지 내 물자를 일시 집중시켜 다시 메트로폴리스로 이송하는 중간자 역할을 맡는다. 이러한 메트로폴리스-식민도시-식민지(시골) 간의 위계구도는 인물 간의 관계에서 동일하게 반복되고 있다. 메트로폴리스와 식민도시 간의 구조적 상이점이 자명할 때, 도시를 재현대상으로 하는 소설의 형식에서도 구조적 차이가 발생하게 될 것이다. 서구적 소설 형식이 식민도시를 재현 대상으로 했을 때, 서구 대도시적 특성과 식민지의 낯선 이소적 특질들이 텍스트 전면에 동시에 드러나게 된다. 자본주의 하에서의 근대 도시는 구역별로 세분화되고 위계적으로 발달하는데, 이러한 과정은 소설 하위장르의 세분화로 이어졌다. 박태원 문학도 이러한 세분화 과정이 나타나는데, 크게 ‘구보’와 ‘하웅’ 페르소나 쌍이 주로 등장하는 중단편의‘사소설’ 계열과 ‘김철수’와 ‘리남수’ 페르소나 쌍이 등장하는 ‘장편 통속소설’ 계열로 구분할 수 있다. 후자의 경우, 그동안 배제되어 왔던 경성의 일본인 거주지역인 ‘남촌’까지 서사 공간이 확장되고 있음을 주목할 필요가 있다. 거주지인 북촌에서 조선어로 대화를 나누던 중심인물들은 남촌의 명치정 입구에 들어서면서부터‘일본어’를 사용하기 시작하고, 일본어의 비중과 강도는 점점 높아진다. 식민도시에서 식민지인들의 이동은 자유롭지 않고, 원하는 장소에 언제고 머무를 수 있는 것도 아니다. 따라서 식민도시의 산책자들은 ‘산책’을 계기로 평소 자유롭게 이동할 수 없었던 공간으로 나아갈 수 있게 된다. 이때 작품은 ‘내부 경계’(남촌)를 가로질러 탐사하는 일종의 ‘모험소설’의 형식을 띠게 되며, 등장인물들의 산책은 경성형무소 양어지, 종로경찰서 등 식민지 현실을 비판적으로 재현하기 위한 일종의 전략, 곧 ‘트로이의 목마’ 텍스트가 된다.

영문 초록

Chungchoonsong(‘ode to youth’) may be regarded as Park's representative flaneur text, which describes Japanese Namchon(the southern half of the city) area in details. In the text, it becomes the main plot that two couples have double dates at the same time in Kyungsung. With the device of parallelism, the hierarchical order(patriarchy and imperialism) is disturbed and it becomes difficult to know immediately where the main characters are moving. The colonial city is different from the metropolis, the center of the empire. Therefore, it can be inadequate to analyze colonial city Kyungsung with literary theory based on the metropolis. While with the magnetic concentration of wealth and power in imperial capitals and the simultaneous cosmopolitan access to a wide variety of subordinate cultures, the colonial city is ‘the deprived hinterland.’ The hierarchy among metropolis-colonial city-colony is repeated in the relationship among characters. When a modernist text takes on the native quarter, however, its strangeness in contrast to the mundanities of the metropolis, its heterotopic quality, is foregrounded. The modern city has developed with arrondissements in capitalism. The novel follows this process and become devided into various sub-genres. Park's novels also have similar process of division. The one is the category of short ‘I-novel’ with Kubo and Hawoong personae. The other is the category of long ‘sentimental novel’ with Kim, Chulsoo and Lee, Namsoo personae. We need to pay attention to the latter. The textual setting of these novels is expanded to Japanese area, Namchon. When the main characters enter into this area, they start to speak in Japanese, and the Japanese becomes more fluent. In the colonial city, the colonized people can not go around or stay as they want. Therefore the flaneurs in the colonial city may have the chance to go to some places with flaneury. In this time, the novel becomes a kind of the ‘adventure novel’ which one crosses the line, and is face with the unknown, often the enemy. the story enters a space of danger, surprises, suspense. Park's novel functions as a kind of Trojan horse to smuggle into the Namchon and politically criticize it.
