국문 초록

아리스토텔레스가 수사학을 최초로 창안했다고 하는데, 그 이전에는 수사학이라는 학문이 없었을까? 즉 수사학이라는 학문이 없다가 돌연 아리스토텔레스에 의해서 어느 날 갑자기 만들어진 것일까? 아니면 기존에 흩어져 있던 학문적 내용을 궤어 묶어서 그것을 수사학이라고 아리스토텔레스가 명명했을 뿐일까? 만약 기존의 수사학적 개념을 통합해서 자신의 독특한 학문인 수사학을 만들었다면 그가 생각한 수사학의 모태는 과연 누구의 것인가? 이러한 의문을 가지고 본 논문은 시작된다. 이 물에 대해 답변은 디오게네스 라에르티우스의 저술 『저명한 철학자들의 생활과 의견』이라는 책에서 언급되는 다음과 같은 문구, 즉 “아리스토텔레스는 엘레아의 제논을 변증술의 발명자로 불렀다.”에 근거하여 해결할 수 있다. 그리하여 우리는 아리스토텔레스가 생각한 수사학적 방법이란 바로 제논의 논증방법을 전형으로 삼아서 전개했음을 알게 된다. 본 논문은 아리스토텔레스의 수사학과 제논의 논증방법이 변증술이라는 하나의 어휘로 집약될 수 있음을 입증하기 위해서 쓰여졌다 부수적으로 우리는 그 과정에서 제논의 논증방법인 귀류법이 그 당시 사람들에게 있어 자신의 논리를 설명하기 위해 사용되었던 일반적인 증명방법이라는 것도 알게 된다 왜냐하면 귀류법은 소크라테스의 논증방법과 제논의 그것이 큰 차이가 없이 유사하기 때문이다. 그러나 아리스토텔레스의 수사학적 방법은 모순적인 전제를 가정할 수 있다는 사실에 비추어 보자면 기존의 제논의 논증방법인 귀류법을 초월하는 포괄성을 보여준다. 즉 아리스토텔레스가 사용한 수사학적 방법인 예증법과 생략삼단논법은 귀류법보다는 그 설정되는 전제의 범위가 더욱 광범위하게 전개된다는 측면에서 한 단계 진보된 경향을 보인다. 그러한 진보된 경향으로 드러나는 것이 바로 그가 강조하는 수사학의 다섯 가지 수사술, 즉 논거발견술, 논거배열술, 표현술 연기술, 그리고 기억술이다. 여기서는 지면관계상 다섯 가지를 전부 분석해 보는 것은 무리라고 생각되어 가장 대표적인 기술인 논거발견술만을 연구해 본다. 결론적으로 본 논문을 통해 우리는 아리스토텔레스의 수사학은 변증술이라는 어휘를 사용하여 기존의 논증방법인 귀류법을 포섭하였고, 그것을 근간으로 하여 모순적 전제까지도 아우를 수 있는 포괄적인 조건으로 확대되었음을 알게 된다.

영문 초록

It is said that Aristotle invented Rhetoric from the first, I question, "Before his Rhetoric, did not the Rhetoric exist?" That is, if the Rhetoric did not exit before Aristotle's Rhetoric, how did Aristotle invent the Rhetoric suddenly? Therefore, if he did not invent the Rhetoric suddenly, who is the philosophical archetype in Aristotle's Rhetoric? This thesis start with the questions. The answer of the questions can bring a solution through the reference book, which is written by Diogenes Laetius : "Aristotle desinate Zenon in the school of Eleatics as the inventor of dialectic." That means that the methode Aristotle use in his Rhetoric is applicable as making it the archetype of Zenon's arguments. In conclusion, this thesis is written to testify converging the two factors, that is the Aristotle's Rhetoric and the Zenon's argument, from a vocabulary, dialectic. The process of discussing Aristotle's Rhetoric and Zenon's argument let us know that the methode so called 'reduction to absurdity' is general to explain their position and situation in their times. Because the reduction to absurdity is analogue between Socrate's argument and Zenon's one. But Aristotle's rhetorical methode show us a large extent surpassing the reduction to absurdity of Zenon's argument on setting the approval of contradiction forth as a premise. It seems that Aristotle's rhetorical methode, in other words the principle of example and the enthymeme have a more developing tendency than the reduction to absurdity from a inclusive point of view. It is just Aristotle's five technic of the Rhetoric, that is the invention, the disposition, the elocutio, the memoria, and the actio. On account of limited space, I will study the invention only which is regarded as the representation among Aristotle's rhetorical methods. In conclusion, we can understand Aristotle's Rhetoric through applying the vocabulary, dialectic and know it to be enlarged as far as contardictional premises.
