전남지역의 한국전쟁과 민중의 고통

국문 초록

이 글은 한국전쟁 기간 중 전남지역에서 가장 큰 민간인피해가 발생한 이유와 의미를 탐구하려는 목적으로 기획되었다. 이러한 목적을 위하여 이 연구에서는 한국전쟁 당시 전남지역의 전쟁주체에 대해 검토하였으며, 또 당시 발생한 학살현황과 살아남은 자들의 고통과 그 고통이 갖는 의미에 대하여 살펴보았다. 연구 결과 전남지역에서 전쟁의 주체는 산악지역에 들어가서 게릴라전을 수행하는 빨치산과 그 들을 토벌하고자 진주해 온 군·경 토벌대였다. 나아가 이들은 서로를 ‘정당한 적’으로 간주하지 않았다. 당시의 전남지역은 서로를 부정하는 두 전쟁주체들이 번갈아가며 통치하는 이중권력의 상태였다. 이와 같은 전쟁의 비정규적인 성격과 적대적인 이중권력이 민중의 고통을 가중시킨 중요한 요인이었다. 한편 이들 전쟁주체들이 민간인들을 대상으로 자행한 폭력은 강력한 경계 짓기의 효과를 갖는 것이었다. 한국전쟁은 단순히 이기고 지는 것이 중요한 전쟁이 아니었다. 그것을 통해 남과 북은 국가권력을 새롭게 만들면서 동시에 사회경제적 조건을 결정짓고 있었다. 따라서 한국전쟁을 전후한 시기에 남북한 당국이 주도한 국가폭력은 각기 자기식의 근대성 및 국가의 형태로 사람들을 줄 세우는 방법이었다. 나아가 당시의 경계 짓기는 사람을 죽이고 고통을 가하는 방식으로 이루어졌지만, 그와 동시에 사람들의 순종 및 적극적인 충성을 유도하는 것이었다.

영문 초록

This study have a purpose to disclose the cause and meaning that the biggest victim occurred in Jeonnam region around the period of the Korean War. For this purpose, this study examines the subjects of the Korean War in Jeonnam region, the situation of massacre and the difficulties of people who are alive at that period. According to the outcomes of this study, the subjects of war in Jeonnam region were Partisan who carried out guerrilla warfare and punitive force which comprised the military and the police to conquer red guerrillas. The partisan and the punitive force didn’t think each other legitimate enemy. The Jeonnam region around the period of the Korean War had dual power systems. These irregularity of war and dual power systems were decisive causes that the suffering of people aggravated.
