국문 초록

‘생태적 미래’가 인류의 공멸을 피하기 위한 최후의 어쩔 수 없는 혹은 내키지 않는 선택이 아니라, 인류의 역사에서 의미 있는 ‘진전’으로 받아들여질 수 있는 자발적 선택이 되려면, 그것은 현대문명이 추구해 온 가치관보다 한차원 더 의미 있는 것이어야 할 것이다. 우리의 역사 속에는 물질의 유혹에 맞서 절제된 생활양식을 지속가능한 삶의 방식으로 제시하고 권장하고 실천했던 상당히 성공적인 경험이 있었다. 가난조차 편안히 여기며 진리를 즐겼던 安貧樂道의 삶은 유학자가 지향한 고도의 가치 있는 생활방식이었으며, 성리학의 格物ㆍ致知는 그러한 가치관을 체득하는 인식ㆍ수양 방법으로 제시된 것이었다. 그것은 인간이 자연의 일부로서 자연으로부터 삶의 방식을 배우며 살아가는 것이었지만, 또한 금수초목과 다른 인간다운 삶의 방향을 인식하고 추구하는 것이기도 했다. 당시에도 安貧樂道의 길은 대단히 어려운 일이었지만, 그것은 인간이 자연의 산물이자 자연의 구성원으로서 자신의 생명력을 최대한 발휘할 뿐 아니라, 타자의 생명력도 가장 효율적으로 발휘하도록 도와주면서 자연ㆍ타자와의 조화로운 삶을 이끌어나가는 존재라는 자각과 자부심을 가졌기에 가능한 것이었다. 생태적 미래의 전망과 선택은 ‘문명’의 폐단에 대한 반발에서 비롯된 자연에로의 회귀가 아니라 진정 인간다운 삶이 무엇인가에 대한 고민에 근거한 것이어야 할 것이고, 그러할 때 가난의 자발적 선택은 문명의 포기가 아니라 역사의 진전일 수 있다.

영문 초록

If we expect to pursue ‘the ecological future’ not as the inevitable option for escaping from the fall of the human race, but as the voluntary choice that could be accepted as a meaningful advance in the human history, ‘the future’ should have more significant value than the future that the modern civilization has pursued. Fortunately, we have the successful experiences in our history that the ancestors recommended and practiced as the sustainable way of life against the material temptations. The lifestyle in which people lived content amid poverty and took pleasure in living with tao (安貧樂道) was the most valuable life that the Confucian scholars aimed for, and investigating things and extending knowledge (格物致知) in Neo-Confucianism was proposed as the method of cognition and cultivation to learn the value of it. It was the means that human as a part of nature learned and followed the way of life from nature and recognized and sought the direction of the decent living as a human that was different from those of animals or plants. At that time like today, it was very hard to live content amid poverty and to take pleasure in living with tao. However, it was possible because human has the consciousness and pride that he could lead the harmonious life with others giving full play to his own living power and also helping others display their potential of life. The prospect and choice of the ecological future should be not a return to nature that comes from the resistance against the negative effect of civilization, but a decision that roots on the consideration on what is really a decent life as a human. And only in that situation, the voluntary choice of poverty could be not an abandonment of our civilization but a significant advance on the crossroads of history.
