국문 초록

필자는 그간 한강유역의 고구려 보루 및 북한과 중국 경내의 고구려 성곽, 영세하지만 귀중한 정보들을 제공하고 있는 몇몇 문헌사료를 토대로 고구려 후기의 군사전략 및 군사역량을 복원할 수 있는 실마리를 찾고자 노력하였다. 본고는 이러한 노력의 연장선상에서 집필된 것으로서, 『翰苑』「蕃夷部」〈高麗記〉의 고구려 군사편제 기록과 관련하여 학계에서 일반적으로 통용되는 인식에 의문점을 제기하였다. 더불어 문헌에 기재된 고구려 무관직과 고고자료와의 연관성을 살펴봄으로써 고구려 후기 군사편제가 어떻게 운영되었는지 보다 구체화하는데 그 목적을 두었다. 기존 학계에서는 『翰苑』「蕃夷部」〈高麗記〉가 고구려사를 연구하는 중요한 자료임을 인정하여 여러 방면에서 이를 활용해 왔다. 특히, 고구려 후기 관등 및 관직에 대한 자세한 정보가 실려 있어 고구려 후기의 정치조직 및 군사편제 뿐만 아니라 지방통치체제, 당시 사회상 등을 연구하는 데에 유용하게 활용되었는데, 문헌에 기재된 소략한 정보만 갖고 고구려 후기 군사편제의 면모를 정확하게 살펴보는 것은 어려운 것이 사실이다. 이는‘末若’의 위상 및 편제에 대한 異見이 있는 것만 봐도 알 수 있는데, ‘말약’이 어떻게 해석되느냐에 따라 고구려 후기 군사편제 및 지방통치체제에 대한 전체적인 시각이 달라질 수 있으므로 이는 민감한 사항이 아닐 수 없다. 그럼에도 불구하고 선행연구에서는 이에 대한 고민이 많지 않았는데, 본고에서는 이러한 견해 차이를 고고자료를 통해 새로운 시각에서 살펴보고자 하였다. 그리하여 먼저 경기도 및 서울 일대의 고구려 관방유적을 토대로 고구려 남부전선의 관방체계를 살펴보고, 이를 『한원』에 나오는 고구려 후기 무관직과 연결시켜, 고구려 후기 남부전선의 군사편제를 복원하였다. 그중 논란이 되고 있는 ‘말약’에 대해 새롭게 인식하고, 이를 중심으로 고구려 후기 남부전선의 지휘계통에 대해 再考하였다. 이러한 일련의 작업은 고구려 남부전선의 지휘계통에 대해서 어느 정도 밑그림을 그릴 수 있는 단초를 마련하여 고구려 후기 지방통치체제를 이해하는데 일조를 담당할 수 있으리라 생각한다. 더불어 추후 이를 북한 및 중국 경내의 고구려 성곽에 적용한다면, 고구려의 지방통치체제 및 국가전략을 살펴보는 데에도 유용할 것이라 판단하며, 본고는 그를 위한 사전 준비 작업임을 미리 밝히고자 한다.

영문 초록

I have recently been engaged in efforts, by analysis of such evidence as Goguryeo forts on the Han River, remnants of Goguryeo fortresses in North Korea and China, and fragmented yet valuable textual records; in order to bring to light clues that will uncover a coherent picture of military strategy and capabilities during late Goguryeo; efforts that came to fruition in the form of this treatise. The treatise raises questions on present and general notions in connection with records on the Goguryeo military as they appear in the Records of Gaoli(高麗記), within the Barbarian Chapter(蕃夷部) of the Hanyuan(翰苑). In addition, I seek to identify, if any, connections between titles of military officers of Goguryeo in the textual record and present archeological data. The historical academia has hitherto acknowledged the importance of the Hanyuan, and the Records of Gaoli(Goguryeo) in the Barbarian Chapter, especially in connection with research on Goguryeo history. The Hanyuan’s detailed list of bureaucratic ranks and titles from the later part of Goguryeo history provided invaluable and useful information for research on Goguryeo regional governance and society at the time. Yet the description of the military is intermittent at best, which poses difficulties with respect to an accurate description of late Goguryeo military organization. Such difficulties are highlighted by the dispute, for example, surrounding the status and positioning of the mal-yak, or moruo(末若). A very delicate issue, given that even a slight difference in the interpretation of the term can alter radically the views on late Goguryeo military organization and regional governance. But the lack of concern regarding this issue in previous studies is surprising. This treatise seeks to scrutinize anew the opposing viewpoints through the use of archeological data. This study begins with an observation of Goguryeo’s defense network on the southern frontier based on forts and defense facilities in Gyeonggi-do and Seoul. A connection is then made with late Goguryeo military titles as listed in the Han Yuan, followed by a reconstruction of the military organization in Goguryeo’s southern defensive frontier. A new perspective is offered concerning the hotly-disputed nature of mal-yak, which becomes a key element in the re-evaluation of late Goguryeo military organization in general. It is my firm belief that efforts above can provide the basis for outlining Goguryeo’s military chain of command and facilitate better understanding of the system of regional governance in late Goguryeo. Applying these findings toward what we know about Goguryeo fortresses in North Korea and China would greatly enhance our subsequent investigation of Goguryeo’s regional governance and national security; this treatise will constitute the initial, preparatory phase of the research in that direction.
