국문 초록

배경 및 목적: 어휘 발달은 언어 환경과 밀접한 관련이 있다고 볼 수 있다. 특히 구체적 참조대상물이 있는 명사보다는 의사소통 상호작용을 통해서 습득이 원활한 심성상태(mental state)관련 동사 어휘는 언어 환경에 의해 주로 영향을 받는 것으로 알려져 있다. 그러므로 언어 결핍환경에서 성장하는 건청아동 집단의 심성동사 어휘 발달을 일반아동 집단과 비교하여 보는 것은 언어 결핍 환경이 심성동사와 같은 특정 어휘 발달에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 살펴볼 수 있는 계기를 마련하여 줄 것이다. 방법: 청각장애부모 가정 및 건청부모 가정 자녀(4～9세) 각각 28명을 대상으로 ‘심성동사 그림 표현 어휘’와 ‘이야기 다시 말하기’과제를 이용하여 심성동사 그림 표현 어휘 정확도와 심성동사 사용률, 문장 복잡성 단계별 심성동사 사용률을 심성동사 3가지 유형별(인지동사, 심리동사, 지각동사)로 구분하여 측정하고 비교분석하였다. 결과: 그림 표현 어휘 과제에 있어서는 심리동사 표현 어휘 정확도에서 유의미한 차이가 있었고, 이야기 과제에 있어서는 심리와 지각동사 사용률에 있어 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 이는 심성동사 어휘 발달에 있어 언어 환경 요인이 작용한다는 선행 연구결과와 일치하는 것이다. 그리고 문장의 복잡성 정도에 따른 심성동사 사용률에 있어서도 집단 간 차이는 유의미하였다. 건청아동 집단의 경우 심성동사를 사용한 복문 표현빈도가 적었고, 특히 지각동사를 사용하여서는 단문으로 표현하는 빈도가 높았다. 논의 및 결론: 이는 심성동사 유형별로 구문 사용의 특성이 언어 환경 집단별로 차이를 보이기 때문으로 사료된다.

영문 초록

Background & Objectives: Mental verbs, which can be learned only from communication, have a greater effect on hearing children who have deaf parents. Therefore, to determine the difference between children of deaf parents and children of normal parents, comparing their communications skills especially in mental verbs will provide ideas regarding how deaf parents affect language development in their hearing children. Moreover, through different expressions of the mental verbs, different daily activity patterns and standardized social patterns can be observed. The present study shows the characteristic of mental verbs comparing two groups (children of normal parents versus children of deaf parents) from preschool through elementary school. Method: The accuracy, ratio of frequency (mental verb/clause) and linguistic structure complexity levels of mental verbs through the “mental verbs picture expressing words” and “story retelling: frog where are you?” tasks were measured. The authors received basic information on how much time was spent by parents with their children and compared the results between the hearing children with deaf parents and children with normal parents, (age 4 to 9 years). Each group consisted of 28 subjects. Results: The children of normal parents significantly outperformed the children of deaf parents regarding the accuracy of the psych mental verbs picture expressing words and the ratio of frequency of perceptive and psych mental verbs through story retelling. The difference in the linguistic structure complexity levels of using mental verbs between children with deaf parents and children with normal parents was significant. The linguistic structure complexity levels of using mental verbs were significantly greater in the children of normal parents than in children of deaf adults (CODA). Discussion & Conclusion: The results from the present study indicate that, from 4 to 9 years of age, children’s ability to make statements using mental verbs changes qualitatively with the linguistic home environment, especially syntax.
