영문 초록

This study has reviewed academic trends on the study of Korean immigration to Manchuria and the main points can be summarized as follows. (1) After Korea’s independence in 1945, academic works on history of immigration began as a background research to the study on the issue of Kando(間島) or the research on Korean independence movement. Hence, it has mainly focused geographically on North-kando(北間島) whose territories are disputed, and periodically on 1910s～1920s when the right-wing independence movement was most active. Furthermore, the main issues centered on social economic history, nationalist education, or religious study in order to reinforce the research on independence movement. (2) Establishment of diplomatic relation with PRC provided a new platform for the study on Korean society in Manchuria and history of immigration. Active academic interaction led to new environment in which researches by Korean scholars could acquire variety and depth. However, more important and decisive contribution in activating the research came from participation of Korean Chinese scholars. They contributed to improvement of research levels through various means. In particular, contribution by the researchers who gained their degree in Korea need to be noted. (3) Thanks to such improvement of research environment, many advanced research papers on a wide range of issues has been produced since late 1990s. Such trends can be observed in individual papers, but it is the degree thesis which seems to exhibit a variety of topics and research depth. Participation by Chinese Korean scholars are, again, especially active in the production of degree thesis. At least 5-6 researchers have returned home after successfully completing their thesis on Korean society in Manchuria, or on history of immigration. (4) These research achievements help to deepen our understanding on the history of Korean immigration to Manchuria. Not only have the Korea society in Manchuria during the 1920s～1930s been revealed, but more complete and comprehensive picture of Koreans in Manchuria during the 1930s～1940s has become available. Moreover, in the area of early immigration period, the academics have acquired better understanding on important issues such as Qing’s Prohibition(封禁) policy, issue of Illegal Border-river Crossing (越江), repeal of Prohibition policy, and formation of Korean society on the Manchuria as a result of illegal crossing border-river. (5) Despite the recent achievements, more works need to be done. In order to grasp a more complete picture and systematic understanding, we need to carry out independent research on the history of immigration itself. This study believes that incorporation of various perspective and methodologies that are employed in other subjects can be invaluable assets to such researches. It is important to equip ourselves with open-minded approach to other branches of academic disciplines in our attempts to understand the reality of Korean society in Manchuria.
