지눌 정혜결사의 근현대적 계승 고찰

국문 초록

보조국사 지눌은 고려후기의 수행자며 사상가이기도 하다. 지눌은 고려사회뿐만 아니라 동아시아 격동의 역사와 궤를 맞춰갈 수밖에 없었던 시대상황 속에서 불교 내부의 선종과 교종의 융합이라는 전혀 새로운 불교의 시원을 열어보였다. 선과 교가 분리될 수 없음을 일깨워 고려불교에 통일성을 기하고 이를 바탕으로 불교의 혁신, 나아가 요익중생의 종교본분을 모색하였다. 그 사상의 근간이 바로 정혜결사운동이다. 결사는 단순히 수선사에 그치지 않고 고려후기를 거쳐 억불숭유의 조선과 근현대사의 질곡을 극복할 사상적 대안이 되었다. 본 논이 고찰하고자 하는 것은 정혜쌍수라는 지눌의 선사상과 그 사상의 실천이라 할 결사가 오늘의 근현대에서 어떻게 계승되고 있는가에 대한 것이다. 한국불교가 심한 부침을 겪으면서 사상의 단절은 필연적인 결과였다. 근현대 선사상을 새롭게 정립한 경허와 한암의 결사계승, 나아가 수선사 16대 마지막 국사였던 고봉의 몽중수기를 받은 효봉이 송광사를 불교중흥의 근본도량으로 인식하고 제자인 구산이 조계총림과 국제선원을 세워 선의 대중화를 실천하고 제2정혜결사운동을 천명하여 오늘에 이르고 있다. 한 산중에서 천년에 가까운 세월 동안 그 나라의 종교사상을 주도해나간 역사가 흔하지 않다. 여기에 착안하여 과연 통시대적인 지눌의 결사정신이 무엇이며, 교단과 사회가 혼미한 때일수록 자기정화의 실천대안으로 정혜결사가 주목받는 역사를 천착해봄으로서 미래사회의 불교역할을 모색해 본 것이다. 즉 시대를 달리하여 자기 극복 내지는 교단정화의 씨줄날줄로 작용하는 결사정신의 가치에 대한 고찰이다.

영문 초록

Bojokuksa Chinul is a discipliner and ideologist in the second half of Goryo Dynasty. Chinul showed the totally new initiation of Buddhism that is the fusion of zen sect and non-zen sect inside the Buddhism in the midst of the social situation to be in line with the dynamic history of East Asia and Goryo Society as well. He contributed to the unification of the Goryo Buddhism by enlightening the no separation of zen and non-zen and explored the innovation of the Buddhism and the duty of the religion for benefiting sentient beings based on this. The base of the thought was the samadhi and prajna movement. The prajna was not popular in Susun Temple only but it became the ideological alternative to overcome the Choseon Dynasty which restricted Buddhism and pursued Confucianism and the fetters of modern history. This thesis is to consider how the zen thought of Chinul that is the both study of zen and knowledge and the association which can be the carry out of the ideology is succeeded in modern times. The disconnection of the thought was an eventual result during the severe twists and turns in Korean Buddhism. Gyunghuh and Hanam succeeded the association which is the new establishment of modern zen thought. Furthermore, Hyobong who received the instruction during dreaming of Gobong who was the 16th and the last national zen master of Susun Temple recognized the Songkwang Temple as the fundamental place for the revival of Buddhism and his student, Kusan performed the publication of the zen by establishing the Chogye Chongrim and international zen center and it reached today by declaring the second association of samadhi and prajna. The history of dominating the religious facility for a period of nearly one thousand years in the deep mountain was rare. By taking an idea from this point, this study explored what is the spirit of the association of Chinul and explored the role of the Buddhism in the future society by scrutinizing the history of association of samadhi and prajna of Chinul which draw attention as a practical alternative in the self purification in the chaotic times of the religion organization and society. Consequently, this thesis considered the value of throughout times which acts for the basic pattern for the self overcoming and the purification of the religious organization in different times.
