국문 초록

본론은 한역(漢譯) 대장경에서 음역어로 파생된 문제들 중 일부를 대표적 사례로 추출하여 검토한다. 여기서는 음역이 유발할 수 있는 착오의 양상을 사례별로 제시하는 데 중점을 두었다. 이에 따라 판독의 오류를 유발하기 쉬운 사례, 파격적인 음역으로 원어를 파악하기 어렵거나 혼동하기 쉬운 사례, 대정신수대장경 또는 이의 번역본에 제시된 원어가 부정확한 사례를 예시하여 검토했다. 그러나 여기서 검토한 사례들은 그야말로 빙산의 일각에 불과하다. 그런 만큼 음역어는 한역 불전을 판독하거나 그 내용을 이해하는 데 복병과 같은 장애가 된다. 더욱이 이런 장애는 한역 불전에 국한되는 것이 아니다. 중국의 학승들은 한역 불전에 의거하여 많은 저서를 남겼다. 이런 저서에는 당연히 기존의 음역어들이 구사되지만, 음역어들의 의미를 잘못 이해하거나 해석한 사례를 흔하게 발견할 수 있다. 이때문에 중국인의 저서에서 설명하는 음역어 대해서는 일단 오해의 가능성을 검토해 보아야 한다. 음역어로 인해 파생되는 문제들은 애초 번역시에 사용했던 원전을 확보한다면 간단히 해결된다. 그러나 그러한 원전이 없는 현실에서는 관련 자료를 다각적으로 비교하고 분석하는 것만이 최선의 해결책이다. 근래에는 과거에 수집된 단편적인 사본에 대한 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 이 사본들은 비록 극히 일부의 원전에 지나지 않지만, 모호한 음역어들의 정체를 밝히는 데 중요한 단서가 될 것이다. 음역어의 문제는 개인적 노력으로는 결코 해결될 수 없다. 이 문제는 불전의 원전들을 소장한 단체, 그리고 원전을 연구하는 학자들과 연대하여 공동으로 연구해야 할 국제적 과제에 속한다.

영문 초록

In this paper I examined representative examples in Chinese Tripitakas containing problems abstracted from transliterated words. I focused on illustrating the patterns of mistakes. In other words, I review possible examples: cases that easily lead to deciphering errors, cases of aberrant transliterations which make it virtually impossible to identify the original words, and cases of unclear or ambiguous original languages which are suggested in T or the translation of T. However, the examples examined in here are merely the tip of the iceberg. Transliterated words are significant hurdle waiting to ambush any attempt to understand or read the Chinese Tripitaka. Moreover, this difficulty is not limited into the matter of translated Chinese Tripitaka. Student monks in China wrote many books based on translated Chinese Tripitaka. Of course, those kinds of books relied upon existing transliterated words but the meanings were frequently misunderstood or misinterpreted. Because of this reason, transliterated words within Chinese works must to be carefully reviewed for the possibility of a misunderstanding. The matters derived from transliterations would be easily resolved if the original manuscripts still existed. However, there are no such manuscripts in reality and thus the best solution is to engage in comparative analysis of related materials from multi-perspectives, what textual critical scholars in the west refer to as textual eclecticism. Recently, the research on fragmentary manuscripts collected in the past has prospered. Even though these fragmentary manuscripts are only a small part of the larger corpus they can provide important clues in the search to reveal the identity of ambiguous transliterations. The issues of transliteration problems presented in this paper cannot be resolved by personal endeavors; they are problems that are international in scope and their solution requires mutual assistance between scholars who are working on manuscripts and Buddhists institutions which possess manuscripts.
