영문 초록

In this paper, we examine the syntactic structures of a variety of English relative clause constructions by using the theoretical assumptions and devices from Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar, propounded especially by Sag (1997) and by Sag and Wasow (1999). Six types of relative clauses are identified by their syntactic properties: whether the verb form is finite or nonfinite and whether there is a gap or not. (1) In the case of a nominative relative clause, its verb form is finite and there is no gap in it; (2) the verb form of a non-nominative relative clause is finite and there is a gap in it; (3) a that relative clause has a finite verb as its main verb and there is a gap in it; (4) a bare relative clause, which has no relative pronoun, has a finite verb as its main verb and there is a gap in it; (5) a to-infinitive relative is nonfinite and has a gap in it; (6) the verb form of a contracted is nonfinite by definition because the main verb is either a present or past participle. All these relatives can be successfully characterized by the combination of different values of the three features, MODIFIER, SLASH and RELATIVE and at the same time by the system of a multiple inheritance hierarchy of the six different types of relative clauses.
