영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the basic properties of English Passive Construction and provide a lexical, constraint-based analysis. Traditional approach to passive construction provided only syntactic analysis, that is, according to their approach, only some transitive verbs can be found in passive construction via passive transformational rule. Sane intransitive verbs, however, can be found in passive construction. In this paper, I propose a lexical, constraint-based approach in a syntactic, semantic interface to English passive construction, and suggest some lexical rules to analyze English passive construction. One is a Passive Lexical Rule to analyze passive constructions through interface of syntax and semantics. The other is an Argument Composition Lexical Rule, a kind of Reanalysis rule, to analyze some passive constructions generated from intransitive verbs. With the proposed lexical rules, I analyzed some idiosyncratic passives, what so called, positive and negative exceptions in English passive construction.
