영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the general properties of English free relative clause constructions which are different from ordinary relative clause constructions and to provide an explanation of their mixed behaviors, based on a constraint-based theory, especially Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar. Though the constructions share some properties with ordinary relative clause constructions in that both constructions have a gapping element and a wh-word, I argue against the ordinary relative clause analysis, and conclude that the English free relative clause constructions constitute a head-complement structure. And I provide my own analysis, utilizing two kinds of type hierarchies, a categorial type hierarchy and an index type hierarchy, and multiple inheritance system of constraints attributed to relevant supertypes. Basically I take the view that the idiosyncratic characteristics of free relative clause constructions attribute to the lexical properties of wh-elements. Based on this type, I try to explain the mixed behaviors of free relatives which function not only as the argument of a predicate in main clause, but also as its adverbial modifier. As well with this type I explain the dual properties of free relatives which occupy the argument positions of main clause externally and the adverbial modifier positions internally.
