국문 초록

이 글은 개념적 은유 ‘죽음’의 사상에서 나타나는 은유적 활용의 부분성이 어떻게 나타나는지를 밝히는 데 있다. 이를 다면적 인지모형(MCM)에 적용한 결과를 보면, 첫째, 다면적 인지모형 요소의 출현 빈도에서 단일/복합작용이 모두 나타난 근원 측면은 목표 측면인 죽음보다 다양했으며 이들은 대체로 ‘목적면>형상면>작용면>재료면’ 순이었다. 둘째, 주체의 작용력 측면에서 주체의 능동적 태도(12.5%)와 수동적 태도(87.5%)로 나눌 수 있는데, 이것은 목표 측면에서 주체의 통제 상실 여부에 맞대응했다. 이를 통해 우리는 주체의 능동적 태도에 의해 죽음을 통제하기보다는 수동적 태도에 의해 죽음에 통제당하고 있음을 유추할 수 있었다. 셋째, 은유적 활용의 부분성 파악은 결국 목표영역 ‘죽음’에 대한 이해의 폭을 제고할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the partiality of metaphorical utilization in the thought of the conceptual metaphor 'death'. Applying the proposed multifaceted cognitive model (MCM) for this purpose, the results are as follows. First, in terms of the frequency of occurrence of the elements of the MCM, the source aspect in which both single and multiple actions occurred was more diverse than the goal aspect, death, and they were generally in the order of 'goal aspect> shape aspect> action aspect>material aspect'. Second, in terms of the subject's agentic power, we could distinguish between active (12.5%) and passive (87.5%) attitudes, which was consistent with the subject's loss of control in the goal aspect. This allowed us to infer that death is being controlled by the subject's passive attitude rather than being controlled by the subject's active attitude. Third, the identification of the partiality of metaphorical utilization ultimately led to a broader understanding of the target domain of death.
