영문 초록

The purpose of this essay is to analyze the concept of ‘the second death’ in the contents of novel 「Jeungmyo」. The fundamental concept of ‘the second death’ that the apparently all-inclusive whole of life and death are supplemented, by both a living death and a deathly life, points to the way in which we can die not just once, but twice. This is death in the real, involving the obliteration of our material selves. But he also suffers a symbolic death. This does not involve the annihilation of his actual bodies, rather it entails the destruction of our symbolic universe and the extermination of our subject positions. The gap between the two deaths can be filled either by manifestations of the monstrous or the beautiful. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet for example, Hamlet’s father is dead in the Real, however, he persists as a terifying and monstrous apparition because he was murdered and thereby cheated of the chance to settle his symbolic debts. But, in Sophocles’ Antigone, the heroine suffers a symbolic death before her real death when she is excluded from the community for the purpose of burying his traitorous brother. This destruction of her social identity instils her character with a sublime beauty. Main character of 「Jeungmyo」who lived within sense of guilt and agonizing symptoms being left in symbolic community realizes work that own position and own must do by repeated Jeungmyo’s action. It is own completion of discontinued death justly. But, this death must become death of redemption and it is self-sacrifice for another person justly that satisfies this condition although it must satisfies repay the debt. This self-sacrificing death can finish enervated and painful life of course leading own in eternity that saves other people. Tragic death been seized in circulation endlessly repeats enemy within sense of guilt and pain is discontinued perfectly and he can die in peace. Therefore, sacrificing gestures of a person who feels guilty can be released the gap between the two deaths and complete second death that is the ultimate annihilation. This corresponds to new creative force being ultimate extinction that second death presents.
