영문 초록

Min-hwa (Folk painting) is considered as one of the most popular paintings in the latter term of the Chosun Dynasty. The folk painting was originated from peasant life paintings representing collective aesthetic consciousness of peasants, especially, freedom and openness as well as good fortune and pleasure from the current life. Hyoje-Munja-do, meaning ideographic painting (Munja-do) mainly about filial piety (Hyoje), among various folk paintings contained the eight foundational characters of Confucianism: filial piety, fraternal devotion, loyalty, trust, courtesy, commitment, integrity and humility as their topics of paintings and was produced and used by loyal family members, nobility, and peasants as folding screens for the enlightenment of the Confucian culture, the political ideology in the Chosun Dynasty, including the virtuous life mottos and the edification of the masses. The eight characters of the ideographic painting, Hyoje-Munja-do are interpreted as benevolence of practical virtues of ethics in this study.
