This article’s ultimate aim is to contribute to upgrading the artistic level of Korean creative ballet by raising a question on the basis of the consideration of the modernity accepted by Korean creative ballet field in the light of the subject matters of works, the absence of professional dance directors and the movements of dancers.
In examining the development of Korean ballet, I surveys Korea National Ballet and Universal Ballet, which have accepted as they are, or re-created, classic ballet and the trend of modernism. Regarding the trend of dance composition of foreign modern ballet, I surveys representative dance directors who have been pioneers in modern ballet from Ballets Russes to the present. When it comes to the acceptance of modernity in the Korean modern ballet field, I surveys the subject matters of works, the absence of professional dance directors and the movements of dancers with special focus on the trend of professional ballet companies.
As results of the above surveys, the following conclusions are drawn which have to be solved by the Korean creative ballet field:
First, the big works of professional ballet companies lean upon Korean subject matters. We need the method to modernize the characters for modernizing the Korean subject matters, through which the modern interpretation of Korean subject matters can correspond to the principles of the modern ballet, and the true Korean ballet can be achieved.
Second, there are few professional dance directors for ballet. The abilities of Korean dancers have been greatly developed enough to compete with foreign ones, but the qualities of the Korean ballet works haven’t, mainly because of the negligence to foster the dance directors. That’s why we should alter the educational system for dance directors. It will bring about the improvement of the Korean creative ballet among other genres in Korean domestic dances.
Third, we have neglected the development of the movements of dancers. We have so far focused on the works requiring the basic techniques, which cause friction between movements in the works of the Korean subject matters. Consequently, we urgently need the development of the programs and the methodology for the ballet composition.
